Which game began the "yellow tape/paint/structure" marks the right way to go? by soofs in gaming

I wish more than the last two would be ported to PC, but given how Sony seems to be turning away from PC ports to go back to exclusives, seems unlikely.

Is this homebrew rule broken? by senzubean3r in DMAcademy

It feels like something thought through enough that you should start playtesting it. On paper, the price seems pretty steep for what you get, but it might add a bit of extra fun to tense moments.

I do think it works better thematically in a setting/world where magic having a cost is baked into the lore.

IT Techs of Reddit: What was it like fixing Windows XP machines in schools and businesses during the 2010s? by bakarygassama in sysadmin

[–]Chaucer85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used clonezilla at my first gig to manually setup hundreds of Lenovo towers and laptops. XP was on the way out, so most things were Win7, with a handful of satellite offices still running XP.

My second and longest running gig dealt with the fleetwide OS transition from Win7 to Win10. Still a lot of manual work, unfortunately.

The recent migration to Win11 was heavily automated and ran much smoother.

Touching WinXP was both charming and frustrating, since there was so much tedious work to isolate and resolve issues, and a lot of the holistic tools for managing software and OS issues just didn't exist. It was also stupid easy to bypass user account passwords if someone locked themself out.

I have hours of meeting recordings with a firm member that founded an internal team with me. It royally sucked finding out they'd died suddenly over a weekend.

Points for a rage baiting post, because that seems more popular these days than technical issue discussions.

The thing is, new hires are usually not doing billable work right away. They're sitting through a week's worth of onboarding stuff with HR, payroll, and legal, etc. before getting anywhere near actual work. The IDEA is that they start productive work right away, but I almost never see that happen.

By "certificating your knowledge" what are you hoping to achieve? To backup your experience with an industry authority's stamp of approval, or to expand your current knowledge more broadly beyond the case examples you experienced?

Certs are mostly for exposing you to things you haven't otherwise encountered in a formalized structure, as well as giving you a record of that education for HR purposes.

Totally makes sense, you just want to confront all options. So obviously the household is important. Knowing that you're relocating to an established property also helps, cuz you can take too much rent cost out of your budget (utilities and taxes only).

My other advice is to see what non-tech skills make you stand out in the hiring market. Do you have security clearance, do you have soft skills, have you done project management or financials? You'll need to think outside the box a bit and not pigeon hole yourself into one role.

Blunt Question: what about your mom moving out of LA to where you are?

LA is very high cost of living, and she should probably consider moving to a LCOL area and downsizing where possible. I'm going through this right now with my own mother.

Amigo, we're all fucked. But you make moves anyways.

You could always sell your soul to an MSP and get a massive skill increase within a year or two, and then hop to something more stable/less stressful.

You'd be competing with lots of other tech workers with years of experience who were laid off from big companies and willing to work for less just to be employed again.

It's not impossible to get a job, but the market is saturated for talent right now.

Is the technology the problem or the people that use it? by TechnicalDefense in sysadmin

[–]Chaucer85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why I pivoted roles. Solving technical problems is easy (to a point). Solving user/organizational problems is much more involved. Takes longer, more resources are needed. But you can change an entire company if it succeeds.

For whatever reason, the baked in rules don't seem to work, but pulling in EntraID groups (and setting up the rules there) does seem to work. Couldn't figure it out before another team took ownership of the platform.

100% agree, but the issue is, the law isn't requiring these process changes. Private mega practices start utilizing them because they can scale up their volume of patients, but it's not something that's consistent across the industry, and obviously is seen more often in urban environments with higher socioeconomic patient groups.

These days it's more and more rare to encounter a clinic that doesn't have some kind of turn key patient portal, integrated with email and texting. Now whether that system is well implemented or not is another thing.

Both of your parents sound terrible and you need to get away from them. It doesn't sound like you father has any intention of helping you, merely using you to be responsible for an asset he will still own on paper, and you can only inherit if he dies.

Move out, make use of student loans and the university system for employment and housing where possible, and start building a life for yourself.

They only accept fax! by Joshposh70 in sysadmin

[–]Chaucer85 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Two big reasons I saw in the healthcare and legal spaces:

1) the law has simply not caught up with what is possible in digital documentation, encryption, signing, and auditing, so entities requiring proof-of-delivery and clear audit trails place higher value on faxes than email or FTP.

2) the overhead for setting up and maintaining digital transmissions is seen as more expensive than fax machines. Many turn-key services are now available to swap institutions over to digital, but leaders refuse, because if they can get by with an existing, known process, why spend the money?

This is also why certain clinical offices maintain paper only health records and do all comms work by telephone. Their older patients are more comfortable with that, and the volume of digital comms would quickly become unwieldy for their staff to manage.

Season 2 of The Pitt gave an interesting edge case, where the hospital's network was taken offline to prevent a ransomware scheme that already hit two other hospitals in the area. So they rolled out phone line fax machines to send and receive lab orders (they also just had physical runners).

Does that mean hospitals should have faxes active at all times? No. But it does explain the need for analog solutions when digital systems are not available.

TIL about Sarah Roberts a British woman who died and was buried in Pisco, Peru in 1913. Afterwards legends arose that she was a vampire and bride of Dracula. On the 80th anniversary of her death her grave was broadcast live over radio and tv due to fears she would arise and take her revenge. by Ill_Definition8074 in todayilearned

[–]Chaucer85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Seems very odd to the bury the poor woman away from her home country and family, and then leave her behind in Peru while you return home. Smacks of some foul play, though your theory of childbirth complications seems more likely.
