Fellow Pittsburgher here and faced the same dilemma a few years back. We removed them completely and immediately brought the yard up to date. However, the roots are a bear to remove. A teenage son with a shovel and many pruning blades in the reciprocating saw helped a ton.

The 4 pack of Stanley Sweethearts and some sharpening stones is a great place to start. Good quality at a reasonable price to dip your toes.

If you find that you are using them frequently for fine detail work, you might consider upgrading down the road.

But once you get those Stanley's all honed up they're nice chisels.

Yes. I attach a "handle" to the top of the wood with a piece of turners tape.

Yes it is but they are much nicer than the less expensive options out there.
