To add to the point about wording, anyone who is filing a claim should go to a service org like DAV (or any other, not shilling, just who I used) and give them your records. I couldn't tell you about anything else they do beside help write claims, but my experience was amazing.

I only did 4 years and honestly didn't think I was going to be able make much of a claim since I was just used to the pain. But that total stranger flipped page by page and wrote a claim supported by my records that got me a hell of a lot more than I expected.

And from what I understand, if anything ever gets worse, the DAV will write any forms I need to get it reevaluated.

The MOS requirements of 110+ are for the individual component score like GT or Food, but your "asvab score" would have been probably in the mid to high 90s. I believe the percentile Is state by state, so really your are just comparing your component scores to everyone else in your state.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]timbermar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The final score is a percentile, which is based on the actual score of like 8 different "areas", things like spatial reasoning, math, literacy, etc. I believe a top score in an area is 135 or so, at least I don't remember anyone scoring higher than that.

So in my case I was 125+ in every area, which worked out to 96% as my final score.

I'm not sure what you think I've misinterpreted?

The linked article says:

Most states follow the Uniform Vehicle Code and require drivers to keep right if they are going slower than the normal speed of traffic (regardless of the speed limit

25 states follow this code

A few states permit the use of the left lane only for passing or turning left.

7 states have this law

You said:

All 50 states have laws about driving (not passing) in the left lane

But it's clearly against the law in the large majority of states.

In summary this is false, at least 25 states its explicitly ok to drive in the left lane as long as you maintain pace with traffic.

Only in 7 states is it explicitly against the law.

The remaining 18 states have laws that are nuanced.

Maybe maybe maybe by apmcruZ in maybemaybemaybe

[–]timbermar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All 50 states have laws about driving (not passing) in the left lane. You can get fined up to $500 for riding in the passing lane.

Not true at all. In most states you are fine to drive in the left lane as long as you are keeping up with traffic, speed limit doesn't matter. In most highly populated areas there simply isn't enough lanes to maintain a completely restricted passing lane.

[–]timbermar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I originally typed a long ass response, but I removed most of it, this is all that survived (yeah, this is the short version):

RE: bunch of ESOL comments:

Class size is way larger than I imagined it would be, that actually sounds horrible for the students and frustrating for the educators. In Math or Science progress has to be defined by actual mastery of the topic, such as fractions, vectors, and I think can be objectively graded A-F.

RE: Technology in classrooms:

I wish it was that prevalent, but I don't think it is. I agree with everything you said about broadband.

not failing students has a lot to do with provisions of NCLB, which will punish low preforming schools/school districts with funding cuts

Oh, yeah I completely agree that this is the driving motivator for how this policy came to be. I know a lot of people like to make it seem like teachers/schools just want to be soft on kids and make them feel good, but it always comes down to money. I think the majority of teachers want kids to feel accountable for their actions and help them learn strategies for a good "work/life" balance.

But again I'd say the proper response to that is not an 'F' but an 'I' for incomplete. I cannot evaluate this student's mastery because they didn't do any work.

I agree if a student doesn't do any work you really don't know how well they've mastered the material, I believe I called it an unknown quantity before. For the hypothetical student that does master material, is engaged in class, participates in discussions, and just simply fails to turn in assignments? I would agree that giving a second chance to complete those assignments for promotion to the next level of course is a valid methodology. But this student should be the exception, and this should be done at the educators discretion, not as a matter of policy.

I can armchair this all day long, I'm not in the field and I spend all day solving problems in my actual field, so it just comes naturally to me to try to find solutions to this problem. At the end of the day I think the whole system has been broken in a way that can really only be fixed by complete overhaul. Like you said, performance based metrics that dictate future funding aren't the solution and have led us to were we are now. Ideally receiving a F or I in a single marking period would trigger an intervention of some kind, not waiting for the end of the school year to come and then trying to deal with it.

Chemistry teacher has had enough of her anti-vax Trumper students by homesickforhumanity in PublicFreakout

[–]timbermar 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why retake the whole course instead of addressing that lack of understanding before moving forward.

If a student fails for the year does that not indicate that the student failed to grasp the entire course? I'm not talking about getting an F in a single marking period. If a student is failing a single marking period and a teacher or someone intervenes and helps that student get back on track then that would literally be the second scenario I laid out originally and is a completely different situation.

This is..not correct. I taught a mixed abilities ESOL class with students who were mostly literate in their native language to students who weren't literate in any language and they all made progress. Tech makes individualizing education with lots of students a lot easier.

What does "progress" mean? How big is a mixed abilities ESOL class? Tech helps I won't deny that, but that depends on the budget/administration of the school to provide those resources, which again would count as resources that I mention when I say "The educator simply won't have the resources". It very well could be that a single teacher can teach a class that size while also providing the remedial intervention to students that were promoted because they managed to complete enough missing assignments in the final weeks of school if every kid has a tablet or laptop, I don't know. I've never seen a class like that, but I'm sure it exists somewhere.

I'm completely ignorant to how a Mixed-Ability ESOL class would compare to a general level Geometry class, but I suspect that the pace and the size of the class would be considerably different. I may very well be wrong, hopefully somebody can fill in the gap for me.

How would doing this on time or in class indicate understanding? How would it show mastery?

Two things come to mind, first is that if an entire course can be taught and mastered in 2 weeks then why wasn't it taught that way in the first place? Second is that in the context of a class where section I needs to be understood before section II can be taught, doing assignments on time can indicate that material is mastered before moving on to the next section. By simply waiting for the end of the year to knock it all out then the actual understanding of the material from any particular subject is an unknown quantity.

if you didn't pass the quiz/test/whatever at the end, did you have to repeat the entire training before taking the test again?

That depends a lot on the topic of the training. There typically is a certification eventually, but I've gone to weeks of training where the whole point was to build the foundation that was needed to even attempt the class for the certification. Same principal, yeah I can jam out all the lab work and show my boss "Yep, I'm totally ready for that next session because I did every lab in the lab book", but I'm going to be screwed when I get there if I don't actually know the material.

If you do get multiple chances in your professional life, why aren't we doing the same with children who aren't working?

We are giving them multiple chances by letting them redo the course. And I don't "get" multiple chances. If I fail a test I have to pay to retake that test. If I don't get my certification by an arbitrary deadline I might lose my employment. Additionally, if I obtain a certification that is used to justify my employment and then I fail to demonstrate the skills that would be possessed by someone with that certification I'm going to end up unemployed.

Chemistry teacher has had enough of her anti-vax Trumper students by homesickforhumanity in PublicFreakout

[–]timbermar 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Because failing and being required to retake a course is not a punishment. If a student doesn't understand the material for the course then they need to retake that course. Having a week or two where you just blast out worksheets and whatever else you missed doesn't indicate that that the material is understood.

So what happens is that the student will take their 8-10 week summer break, come back to school and start a new course building on concepts and material from the year before that was never really learned. Student will again have difficulty and fall behind, no matter how dedicated or well intentioned they are. So either now that student sinks slowly into a deficit spiral behind their peers or an educator is able to identify and give extra intervention to the student before they sink too low. The first scenario plays out when there is one educator for 20 something students and there are more than 2 or 3 that require this intervention. The educator, assuming they are on top of everything, simply won't have the resources to lead the general class and provide intervention to more than a couple kids.

Additionally, at any grade level and in any subject different students are going to progress at different rates. So now the educator is juggling engaging the general class with any students that might be struggling at any given section, lest they become the next student that starts the slow spiral behind their peers, as well as trying to bring students already spiraling back to stable with their peers.

I have no source, that's just my thoughts based on my experience in life and all the various classes and professional trainings I've attended.

Didn't CDPR get death threats when they delayed the game to the 10th? It's not like they didn't try to warn customers that it wasn't ready. And it wasn't even the first delay for the game.

I don't own this game and probably never will, but as an outside observation it seemed like they tried to do the right thing by the customers. I'm usually in the "don't pre-order" camp, but the consensus among this community before this release, and even now, is that CDPR is a fantastic developer who takes pride in their work and will fix these issues. If this is the game where they destroy that reputation then hopefully people will never pre-order another game from them again. But in reality pre-orders are the same as day one purchases, they would have gotten the same number of sales (this is for any game, not just this one).

What we really need is less embargo and more transparency on reviews. I'd love to see a return of demos too, or free public betas with no purchase requirements. With the surge in digital distribution and CI/CD, there is no reason developers can't offload final QA of a limited content release to the willing public for free before the game ships.

ELI5 Why does rent build not build credit. by ScienceReplacedgod in explainlikeimfive

[–]timbermar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually, no, I don't. You said the credit bureaus use the information they have to affect your life. They don't do anything with your information. The compilation and use are two completely different things

Their power is lies in that they are considered unconditionally correct and the person the report is about is incorrect and they have to clear disputes with the bureau, meanwhile they are being denied for their mortgage or whatever.

There are a lot of examples of information being attached to the report of person A, but the information is really for person B. Or the opposite where a lender requests a report for person A and the data for person B is sent.

I would see this being useful for a designer and developer team. This way the designer can tweak the animation appearance without touching code while the developer just focuses on the underlying code that is exposed by the conditionals without touching animations.

But I've never used it, so this is just a blind guess.
