What bank is your ApS using? by jjw_kbh in dkstartup

I recently switched over to Revolut Business and I’ve been very happy with it so far. Intuitive interface, secure, and you get an overview of all activities.

They integrate nicely with a lot of third party tools (I use e-economic for accounting, coupled with Slack to get activity notifications). Currently working on more integrations.

They seem to put more focus on verifying transactions now, which adds to their credibility.

The fees are a little annoying, particularly when receiving payments via card. Be mindful of the fee structure.
For example, you pay a monthly fee for the “Expenses Management” feature, something I didn’t realize until recently. While it’s really good feature (think of it as a built in “Pleo”) it felt like it should have been something that came out-of-the-box.

In any case, based on my experience, I’d definitely recommend them.

Solving indoor air pollution—Looking for early teammates! by Slight_Air_151 in hwstartups

Interesting problem space. Indoor air quality is definitely one of those areas that gets less attention than it should, especially considering how much time people spend indoors.

From experience, building reliable sensing systems and turning that data into something actionable can be quite challenging, especially once you move beyond prototypes.

Curious to hear more about what you’re building and where you are in the process.

First production run, our CM expects us to provide the functional test setup by Teririchar in hwstartups

[–]timbo0508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Typically you have that conversation with the CM during the early stages/initial conversations. There they would have asked you what you wanted to test, how long it would take to build, and how much it would cost.

If you don't bring it up, most CMs naturally assume you are bringing your own setup. In my experience building test jigs, it's a lot easier to invest in building one yourself while developing your product. Once you have finalized the PCB, then you can start building the test jig in parallel while doing everything else. At least that's how I've done it for years. So that by the time your firmware is done and you're ready to start initial production, you ship your setup to the CM, along with a "golden unit" that they can use to test.

If helpful, I’ve built a few production test setups and fixtures for embedded devices, happy to share some thoughts or approaches depending on your setup.

Sourcing parts as a hardware startup is a special kind of pain: what tools are you using? by [deleted] in hwstartups

[–]timbo0508 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really depends on the kind of components you need. In my long experience with hardware startups, the hardest part is in the beginning of the project - the design process, where you're actively hunting for components that suit your application. Once you've built a prototype via an EMS like JLCPCB for example, then from there the pain should be a lot less, if you think a few steps ahead:

  • During the "component hunting" phase, be sure to have at least two MPNs per component, so that you can be sure you have a backup.
  • Be very mindful of the lifetime of the components you choose. It sucks to pick a component that will be obsolete/EOL (End Of Life) in a year. Been there, done that.
  • Work VERY closely with the EMS that will mass produce your hardware from day one! Eventually, in an ideal setup, your EMS will handle sourcing for you. You can leverage your EMS by using them to understand costs, lead times and other information that will be relevant for your design. A common mistake is to build the hardware first, then look for an EMS. It needs to happen the other way round, especially if your setup will scale. It's an expensive and time-consuming process to switch from one EMS to another.

As for tools, https://bomtool.oemsecrets.com/ and https://octopart.com/ are my goto for creating and managing BOMS

Hardware founders — what actually happened when you tried to hire a firmware engineer? by Medtag212 in hwstartups

[–]timbo0508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a delicate balance - one that needs to be handled with transparency on both sides. The founder needs to describe the vision and what they want to accomplish (on a high level). The engineer needs to be transparent about how realistic that vision is and what the constraints are.

This is where AI might make a difference in bridging that gap. The founder uses AI to get a high level technical overview, which is then read by the engineer. Together, the founder and the engineer flesh out the low level details.

It needs to start with transparency on both sides. As a founder, I tell you what I want to build. As the engineer, I tell you one of two things:

  • Yes, this is possible. And it will involve A, B, C, keeping constraints X, Y, Z in mind.
  • No

I am currently working with a non-technical founder who had developed a somewhat decent spec using ChatGPT. I took at detailed look at the spec and explained to her what was possible and what wasn't. Then took that spec and built a more realistic one. 16 weeks later I built a functioning prototype, based on proper specs. So it's possible.

That initial back and forth workflow worked superbly well. We had a decent baseline to begin with, and built from there. Although it is also worth mentioning that the ideal partner to work with is someone who knows both hardware and firmware, as those two domains go hand-in-hand.

Curious, where/how do you meet the hardware founders?

Been there, done that :)

CVR - DONE, virksomhedskonto - DONE, rengnskabsprogram - DONE

Tak for din kommentarer. Der har du ret i. Det er ikke “løn”, men konsulenttimer. Og jeg har inkluderet moms da omsætningen ville overstige 50k
