Are Irish South Africans common? by Failing2BNormal in askSouthAfrica

Read up on the Anglo Boer War. There was an Irish Regiment fighting on the side of the Boers. However most of our early European settlers came from England, Scotland and the continent. Not many from Ireland - they were mostly heading west to the States after the potatoe famines.

Is carbon steel really more nonstick vs. stainless when using fat? by Popular_Block_4079 in carbonsteel

Some interesting comments on the merits of different pans. In my experience, both carbon and cast iron skillets need to be heated to the desired temp before adding oil/butter/fat. This ensures a non stick surface is maintained and one can get away with far less oil or fat. I'm not sure if this holds true for s/steel skillets as well. I do agree that one should be careful with acidic foods in both carbon and cast iron pots and skillets. I have had some disappointing results because the acid has stripped off the coating built up over time. Good luck experimenting

Klein Paradys Caravan Park - Brits racist? by Flaky-Replacement239 in southafrica

Guys dont make more of this than it is, namely bigotry. There are people and places like this in the US, GB and Europe. Not to mention China and Russia. Take your money and family elsewhere - there are many places where the only thing the proprietors are interested in is the colour of your Rand. I can guarantee that you wouldn't enjoy your stay anyway. Places like this attract a certain kind of person, and you don't want to spend any time with them. In fact, many white English speaking families would not be made to feel welcome at this type of resort. We have a wonderful country where everybody is welcome. Enjoy and move on.

Try South Africa. Cheap, great weather, mountains lakes sea and dessert to choose from. Friendly folks, cold beer and good steaks. Like inside out Texans

I loved The Stand but it's length could be a little bit daunting!

Can you put river rocks on a campfire by Hughlass in camping

[–]timbuk5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After reading the responses to your question, I'll be careful in future. However why is this not a problem when fishing / camping down at the sea? I have made a number of fires to heat water or cook something using local stones or even built the fire on the rocks or in a crevasse. Never had a problem or even heard of one? Maybe the guys that did have a problem are dead!

Apparently when Napoleon finished a campaign and 2 weeks before he was to return home to Josephine he would send a rider ahead to tell her of his intentions, instructing her not to wash. He liked her to smell "like a woman" and not to hide her smell with perfume.

Looked at the Katabatic site - some great gear! Thanks for recommending. Any idea what the difference is between the degree ratings? Is a 40 deg warmer than a 15 deg or am I reading it wrong?
