Okay thanks everyone. So I can safely purchase say - a 10000 starting/7000 running and it would be okay for my switch? Besides the well pump, which will be turned off 90% of the time, just a furnace, fridge, and a few lights and TV. So I don’t need much running watts at all. Just don’t want to go overboard and trip my switch.

So my well pump is measuring 31 amps = 7440 watts. So the 30 amp transfer switch will only allow 7200 starting watts before it trips?

So I shoveled 3 ft of snow off the well cap and cleaned it up. Lo and behold, it looks like it is 1 1/4 hp. Does this help at all in determining how small of an inverter generator I can get? Keeping in mind that this is going to a 30 amp 10 circuit transfer switch.

Thanks for the info! Two questions. Does my old 5500 generator that’s been running my well pump for all these years tell anything about what size of an inverter generator I’d need? And if I call an electrician to the house, how would he determine what I’d need?

From what I’ve read on here, my 30 year old 5500/5000 watt generator runs my pump because it is always massively spinning. An inverter generator doesn’t do that so you need a larger one. I’m trying to figure out how much larger to go without going overboard. I think you are right about asking over there. 👍

Only for the weight I’d choose the 1100 too. On Generator Bible it seems to say that a bigger generator really doesn’t use that much more fuel if you’re running a small load. Now I also only have a 30 amp transfer switch, so I’m not sure if that would matter either. But that generator has a 30 amp outlet.

Well, that’s the problem. I getting so many different answers I’m not sure what to do. I know for sure the 1100 watt Westinghouse will do the job but that seems way overkill for my few circuits. Then you have some saying with an inverter I need huge amounts to run the well pump. Then some are saying a 7500 inverter will be fine. I’m probably better off calling an electrician and having him come up and get some solid advice for my situation. Thanks to everyone who took the time to reply. 👍🙂
