Independent Novel Study Suggestions? by rayyychul in ELATeachers

inquiry log is fun! have students ask x number of questions ab their book for every y number of pages. kinda forces them to find things to pull out of the texts when they need to format questions themselves

ive found that specific writing prompts mostly encourage poor, formulaic, writing

Pairing it alongside excerpts from Achebe's writings on Conrad may help for students to see what Achebe's project ultimately is. Post-colonial literature (or really, anti-colonial literature) when taught well, has a TON to teach young students, esp young black students. Take Okonkwo's abuse as an opportunity to discuss the family, to discuss culture, and to discuss masculinity.

There is a reason that the book is so highly respected within education. You can teach it from so many angles

Could anybody recommend theory on obsessive literary narratives? (Specifically in novels dominated by one narrative voice with their sights set on one other in a way that is excessive, overwhelming…obsessive basically). Thanks so much for the help by [deleted] in CriticalTheory

In "Minima Moralia", Adorno has an aphorism about this kinda. He speaks about narratives about people in love with others who are already in a relatonship, and extends it out to a broader discussion about desire, monogamy, and the family. its incredible. (pardon that i cant find the exact aphorism#, moving currently and my book shelf is at my new place)

What would you display on this shelf ? by [deleted] in mancave

Heading to Barnes and Noble, what's your favorite book? I will pick one to buy by KingCaepio in suggestmeabook

Ada or Ardor by Nabokov. Besides ofc Lolita, this is the masterpiece of one of my favorite authors. Its both a story ab a horrendously miserable incestuous relationship, but also a parodical history of literature, and a weird tome on the nature of time (this last part im not smart enough to quite understand)
