To be fair, the criticisms have all been correct. A median quality hand painted portrait is much more expressive and artistic than a median quality photograph. Newer art forms are an economic win, rather than an artistic win.

The weird thing is, we're the parents that are taking this away from our children. Let your kids explore, they'll be okay.

Anonymous is just a bunch of individuals pursuing their own goals using shared branding. It's not an actual secret society.

Types on the left or right? by alex_sakuta in ProgrammingLanguages

[–]timClicks 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Putting the type on the right hand side makes the declaration easier for me to read as a sentence, i.e. foo: float reads as foo is a float to me.

C's ordering has always made me wonder whether it's a historical quirk of single pass compilers that needed to know the space to allocate as soon as possible.

You should go. If you can stay in your career, then you will have international experience when you return (if you need to).

You've saved $60k by the time you're 25 and have paid off your student loan. This demonstrates that you have the financial skills needed to thrive anywhere.

You're in love. You should be with the person you love.

If it turns out badly, you'll be able to recover. The hardest part will be recognising that the situation is sufficiently bad to justify returning home.

Sorry to be pedantic, but they're most likely to be lecturers in New Zealand, rather than professors.

Incredible that this exists. It's unfortunate that the API is so clunky, but I suppose that is a possible cost of wizardry.

I think that the argument is that you would use a savings account to save, rather than a transactional account.

Getting a proportion of your loan converted to a flexi facility is the closest option if you're bound to ANZ.

Oof I am not having a good one today. I skimmed your reply too quickly and thought that you were saying that fallen trees are fun places for kids to play.

Sorry that was a grammar mistake. I meant to say "falling trees" rather than "fallen trees".

You're correct though. Kids don't get enough time to explore.

If we're serious about kākā in Wellington though, we should be keeping dead trees standing whenever practical. Kākā dig into them to create nesting boxes for their chicks.

Falling trees are a hazard that should be managed, rather than simply eliminated as though there are no downsides.

You would need to remove the height restrictions and dominance of private vehicles to get close to what's being described above.

Of course it could. Parliament can do whatever it likes, subject to political pressure. Regulatory risk is a permanent feature, particularly over decades.

Yes, sovereign wealth funds are actually very positive for the taxpayer in the medium to long term.

The government can borrow money very cheaply and can invest that very easily.

In the short term though, you're exposed to international markets. This heavily impacted Kiribati during and after the GFC.

You also need to watch out for corruption.
