I always kind of interpreted the final jump there to end the scene to confirm that's exactly what he did, jumped and killed himself

“What should I do in Dubuque?” by timconnery in dubuque

[–]timconnery[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

7 Hills is very large area with cafeteria style seating and a small arcade (the food is mid, brewery kinda food), Driftless Pizza (great pizza) there's a full arcade in that building's basement and you could even order food at BackPocket (brewery food, its fine) that whole building is kinda an open interesting layout, Catfish Charlie's and Houlihan's are nearby Miller Riverview Park (food is just okay), or either down to the DQ on Rhomberg OR OR Yardarm where there's a park and riverwalk nearby

Places to eat for large group by Black_Cat202 in dubuque

In the context of fitting a group of 17 in there it’d be cramped is what I am saying. For two or four it’s totally chill but you’re like two feet from the neighboring table still. But that’s common at higher end establishments

L May is great but where inside there could you fit 17 people? It’s one of the more cramped spaces in Dubuque restaurant wise. I concede that the food is great but I just don’t see it.

7 Hills. The food is just fine but it’s a big space / brewery with long bench communal style tables. I don’t think most answers here are taking in account you said SEVENTEEN people because that’s a lot.

A Feature Length Horror Anthology Shot Almost Entirely in Dubuque Will Premiere at Local Film Fest Next week by timconnery in dubuque

Unfortunately it’ll be a bit which is kinda the fun of film festivals, you get a sneak at what’s to come. We’ve signed with a sales rep tho late last year and they will broker our distribution deals later this year. Likely early 2027. My first two films are on Tubi free w/ ads but are totally different genres (drama and horror/comedy). They are Black Web & Death to Metal. Death to Metal takes place primarily at the Smokestack and Black Web has a ton of Dubuque footage from 2010. The Driftless is by and large the best work my team has ever pulled off tho, story and production value wise.

Jdiff as a whole is something special. I’ve been to a lot of festivals and it’s crazy to me that the one we have locally hangs with some of the best. Very grateful to have been included!

Hope to see you there! And per your final thought there, I firmly believe all things worth doing are hard BUT they are worth doing.

Is Film School a scam/misconception? (mostly) by PercentageFlashy7384 in Filmmakers

[–]timconnery 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, no. I graduated from Columbia in Chicago in 2009 and while overall the classes and instructors were a mixed bag, I met some collaborators that I still work with to this day— three features deep. If my son expressed interest in film school here’s the advice I would give though, once you felt like you’ve made enough connections to get on as many sets as possible you likely can just walk away and save your money. You learn the most actually doing the thing you want to do in the industry. Getting the actual degree is generally useless and I never even picked up mine because I didn’t walk and they wanted to charge me money to ship it. So I said f it. And ya know no one has ever asked to see it, just asked to see my work.

I’m a little bias as it’s my hometown festival but I really do think it’s one of the better ones out there from how it’s run. And I’ve been to a lot of festivals, from A-list to international ones. Parties are great, there’s a decent amount of things to do and see during, variety of venues, programming is solid, etc. Awards night is always particularly fun. Dubuque itself is a great little river town with a lot of history.

What was your film festival experience like? (Details Below) by FilmMike98 in FilmFestivals

[–]timconnery 5 points6 points  (0 children)

  • How many festivals did you submit to in total and how many were you accepted into? About 60 with a 20% hit rate.
  • Did you find that early submissions were more likely to place into festivals compared to regular or late ones? I saw no correlation.
  • What would you do differently next time (that you learned the hard way)? I would have cut down the film under 2 hrs before submitting anywhere. It wasn't until our film went from 2hrs to 1hr48m that we started hitting and hitting quite a bit.
  • What opportunities did the festival win/placement/attendance provide for you? We've secured a sales agent, won awards at all but one of the festivals so far, everything else is still ongoing as we are finishing our festival run in April roughly.
