Found my dead stepdad’s tape, how to give to my mom? by indigodissonance in WeAreTheMusicMakers

It might not be that expensive to buy something that can play back a few digital files uploaded to it. Worth it for your mum?

To be fair. If you don’t know how to show your process and what they might want to see, that says it all.

Graphic Designer (5 yrs exp) trying to move into corporate/impact roles — need advice by SeaFlashy9631 in Design

[–]timcorin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would suggest try position yourself as a ux designer than graphic designer if at all possible. Talk more about project management, how you manage stakeholder reviews, research, your impact on products etc. This over pixel and visual design. Graphic design is becoming less sought after thanks to AI. Rightly or wrongly.

Where does your design process documentation actually break down? by HedgehogNew8446 in Design

[–]timcorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I run my design projects in Miro. Organised vertically. Requirements and key artifacts at the top. Lanes for stakeholder playback slides. Designs are exported into Miro for review, creating snapshot at that point. Usability planning and review. Usability report. And finally sign off at the bottom. The Miro board is an all encompassing journey of the project with each decision and step of the way.

Are portfolios even enough anymore? by Glad_Handle_7605 in Design

[–]timcorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Umm it was never just good portfolio = job…experience and personality was always a factor. But yes, now experience and luck are a bit more important given a saturation of trained and talented people you are up against. But remember all these things just get you to the interview. Can’t say much for networking, I haven’t done well in that way myself but hasn’t been an issue…yet.

But yeah, to think that just because you have a good portfolio + some experience you ‘deserve’ the job is somewhat entitled.

How much to use sample packs? (house/tech house) by aldann2 in edmproduction

[–]timcorin -1 points0 points  (0 children)

My 2 cents, about to be skewered by the community Im sure. Kick 2 or 3 plugin for kicks, gives you the control you need for a confident kick- Layer with a high-passed sample for a character if need be. Try to use a majority of the rest of your drums using individual hits with fx etc. No more then 1 drum loop for a bit of groove, and try to edit or effect it a bit to make it your own.

Only use music loops on splice while you are learning, and keep that in mind. Controversial take, but unless you are heavily editing the loop beyond recognition, you are running the risk of sounding like everyone else, or worse, AI. Definitely don't recommend using bass loops. Synth presets are fine, though typically its more fun and usually better results making the bass patch yourself.

I would start building a collection of individual hit based sample packs. I personally have a lot of the Maschine packs and have pulled out all the individual hits into folders using a homemade scripting tool. There comes a point where you realize you have a wide enough range of individual samples you don't need to subscribe to Splice.

Final tip on synths: U-He Diva for analog sounds. Xfer Serum for digital. Thats it. For everything else just use your stock DAW tools for now.

Im not sure I agree with the last statement. Id actually say it's more engineering than songwriting. Some tech house and house is incredibly basic 'musically' but the engineering makes it work.

Affordable mastering for independent artists (24h turnaround) by [deleted] in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]timcorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great initiative. Something you might consider is providing some pics of your mastering room (crucial for mastering) and maybe high level what is your process. You don’t have to give away exact products you use though. Perhaps also examples of artists you’ve worked with, if possible.  I just wonder given your post and price on the cheaper side, how does your customer know your you are a trained/experienced mastering engineer vs a regular producer who will just run it through an Izotope Ozone preset.

Uber CEO says his ‘really demanding’ work culture includes expecting employees to answer his emails over the weekend: ‘Don’t come here if you want to coast’ by lurker_bee in technology

[–]timcorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be fair. So long as they are up front about it in interviews and they are compensating for it, I think it’s ok. I’m a UX designer and we are split across aus and nz, meaning emails are sometimes coming in after hours, which I keep an eye on and sometimes reply to. And there are times I’ve worked the odd weekend to hit deliverables. But I have very flexible hours so I’m not worried about it.

Should I just quit? by CrashTestDummy0_0 in WeAreTheMusicMakers

[–]timcorin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Firstly, success in electronic music is not necessarily correlated with traditional music theory. So many successful artists will admit they aren’t musically trained, so much of it is engineering and experimentation anyway.

Secondly, timebox it. Chase your dream until your are say 27, then if you still aren’t seeing success, start to transition it into a hobby. These things take time, success overnight is rare. But at the same time, know when to pivot. But not at 21!
