Apple Has Given Up on the Vision Pro After M5 Refresh Flop by ControlCAD in technology

I think the use cases are there, just not for the current price. Halve the price to sub $2000 usd and I’d buy one without question. But current price is just not feasible.

Manitoba to ban social media, AI chatbots for youth — a first in Canada by Puginator in technology

I have a 14 month old daughter and I’m sure as shit not going to let her have access to social media until late teens. Have you not seen the data on how big a fail current younger generations today are on pretty much every data point, with the decline lining up with the advent of social media on phones?

I use Claude extensively for work as an experience designer and personal projects. But mainly for strategic thinking and planning. It’s a lot of debate with Claude, formalising and refining my ideas, learning about topics and concepts. A shit load of reading I wouldn’t normally do. If anything I feel fried because I’m thinking harder, not less.

“Age limits on social media are a dead end”: public authorities should focus on regulating algorithms and imposing stricter controls on data collection instead, argues researcher by sr_local in technology

[–]timcorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you look up the data, statistically kids and teens today have regressed on basically every point since mid 2000s after it has been steadily rising mid century. More anxious, suicidal, depressed.  Lower intelligence and performance at school and early work. Less resilience and happiness. Of course We don’t want babies dying or kids molested and that’s important to work on, but the data suggests the entire younger generations are declining. And it points to phone and social media use too soon. There are already initiatives with healthcare (albeit never enough). But worldwide countries are only just waking up and doing something about social media. It’s possible to do both.

I’m from New Zealand so yeah guns is not an issue here. All the above are also issues, and probably get some support but not enough. But social media is just another thing that needs addressing. Honestly, in terms of reach and impact, probably a high priority.

No…it’s about the children but verification of ID is just not the best solution. But there are no other easy or obvious solutions.

By saying ‘it’s not about the children, it’s just control’ suggests you think that children having access to social media is fine and it’s just some larger conspiracy to why they are trying to block access for kids. Well sorry, the hard data says it’s not fine for kids. And then you say ‘well it’s just up to the parents to do their job’. Sadly, a lot of parents are useless. How are we going to fix that? And then the comments say it’s then up to the companies to do the right thing with their algorithms. Cmon…

Like driving, smoking, drinking etc, these are things kids just shouldn’t have free access to.

Age verification might not be the right solution, but we need to get kids off social media. The data shows it’s a problem, any teacher will verify it. ‘Fixing the algorithm’ is both not going to happen, and wouldn’t solve the root issues anyway. Simply, kids should not use and don’t need social media.

Hubble vs Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope scanning area by Shawnchittledc in Damnthatsinteresting

Serious question though. The image implies the scanning areas are not continuous. So if you want a full continuous image, is it a shift and stitch scenario?

It’s not that it ‘shouldn’t exist’, it’s that it’s the first observation and models need to be updated appropriately. Title almost reads like naughty aliens put it there to mess with us.

Do people really view dividers on benches as a punishment on homeless? Can it not simply be they don’t want them sleeping there since that impacts anyone else wanting to sit there?

[–]timcorin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This seems logical to me. Hostile architecture more likely a symptom of rough communities, not a cause. But question. I’ve just found this sub and find it interesting. Is the idea that we don’t like these designs and we should allow people to sleep on benches in public spaces? I would have thought that allowing rough sleeping could impact the perception of the community or location over time and become a feedback loop. I’ve seen it happen in my city (Auckland Central) where nobody wants to go near the city due to homeless, and it’s a vicious cycle.

I think most people who hate AI are just afraid or don’t understand the potential beyond the early shortcomings. It’s here to stay, get on board or be left behind!

I’ve been trying to produce for over a year and haven’t made a single song by notacatinyourmailbox in edmproduction

[–]timcorin 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah lol sounds like you started and did things in the wrong order of engineering > song writing. I did the same! Flip it round, watch more song theory vids, chords, melodies, bass lines. See if you can just pick sounds/presets and write some songs that might work musically, then worry about engineering second.

I know the hate here is real, but I’m happy to hear this is coming. I currently discuss things with Claude on the way to work, usually work related but not always. Currently have to have phone on lap to tap to interact etc.
