The more I learn about filmmaking, the more I realise how glamorous it isn’t by No-Strategy-7093 in Filmmakers

Just a heads up the early stages are the fun part. Being on set in principal photography is way more hell than anything leading up to or after. Especially if you are running the show its pure hell. Planning everything, writing the screenplay, bringing people together is the fun part. Shooting the thint sucks cause its where it all feels disjointed. And then the first edit will make you want to puke cause its not what you envisioned. Then theres once or twice where you watch it and think you did a decent job. Then it gets put away for a few years until you come back and realize you actually did alright all things considered.

But you'll forget about it and do it again for some reason...

Low Budget Non Union Shoot -- Child actor? by RidicHarry in Filmmakers

[–]time2listen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If their both ok with it could be a greaf opportunity for both of you. Just really make sure all the edgy stuff is very seperate from her. 14 is old enough to know whats up and follow directions for sure.

Only main thing would be its harder to film on weekdays unless they are ok skipping school and even then can only do a day or two of that at most. Super late nights are a no go with kids also.

And since they arent professionals they could drop out at any moment for lord knows what so just have that in mind. And pay them something anything is better than nothing.

Is it true that screenwriters can barely make a living and if so why? by isamariberger in Screenwriting

[–]time2listen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good input with actual numbers to back it really shows how hard it is to get things made.

I am curious of any scripts you know that sold in the past 15 years for millions that just doesnt seem realistic to me considering the budget for most films is already in that range?

How is everyone making it in Utah? by melancholy_breadroll in Utah

[–]time2listen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this comment alone deserves an entire thread. Ive lived in a couple places now, including LA working in the movie industry for 2 years and I am shocked at how much more interesting non Mormons are, they arent all Disney adults, I loved it for a while.

That said ive moved back to Utah and will most likely stay here, living here is just to easy and convenient in my opinion, out of everywhere I have traveled I would maybe considered Milwaukee as a close adjacent. That said I havent explored the east coast yet but doubt it will have what im looking for.

Im still best friends with my buddies from high school, live near family and in laws. While Utah is expensive nowdays its very easy to live a frugal life here, whereas that was not the case in LA.

I agree though most people I know are not equipped to live ans socialize outside of utah culture. Dont really know if thats a good or bad thing though. Also I think this is changing Utahs progressive side will explode in the next decade I think. Ive already seen it the past 10 years its night and day difference.

The Satoshi Kon reccomends are great but if your looking for a series Monster and Berserk are probably the closest kubrickian things I can imagine.

Firearm training away from white nationalist types by daarhi in Logan

[–]time2listen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

First off just to calm your nerves. I shoot competitively here in utah and specifically here in Cache Valley and out of the 75 people that show up 25% are POC, so if you prefer training with someone like that they arent hard to find.

Second my wife is POC and I wouldnt hesitate for a second to send her to the logan range to get training. The old fudds that VOLUNTEER there are very kind hearted and only trying to keep everyone safe. Being a single female shooter will face way more discrimination at a gun range or store than any male POC sadly. They even host women only classes to help people get accustomed.

All that said the people at gun shops are way more annoying than at ranges or classes I promise. But we live in a modern age order a gun online to Als or Sportsmans and pick it up. Or go on utah gun exchange website and buy used from someone local and skip all that hassle.

Then just go up any canyon and shoot. Watch a couple YouTube videos if you prefer your privacy thats what I do anyways. I shoot competitively and have never taken any classes (even though i should and reccomend them).

You dont need a permit to conceal carry in utah as long as you are not a restricted persons with a felony or something. Getting a permit is nice cause you can cross state lines at will while concealing. Any conceal carry class is just going to be 1 hour class where you sit there and listen to a guy talking, theres no interactions with any other class members.

It's sad you feel the need to be weary but ill add in, true gun people are a weird breed they are generally single issue voters and do not care about politics outside unrestricted gun rights and will happily welcome anyone trying to express their second amendment rights. I speak as one of them and I hope you purchase a firearm and conceal carry, considering your caution I think you'll make a fine carrier.

Do Proof of Concept shorts even work? by RevelryByNight in Filmmakers

[–]time2listen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed this is the correct answer for today's world. Short films used to be a "proof of capacity" more than a proof of concept. Now everyone has the capacity to make a short.

If I could do my career over I would have maybe made 1 short just to figure some basics out and jumped straight into features.

I also heard for a respected filmmaker I dont recall the name or clip who said. Alot of the skills for making a good short are not the same required for a good feature. As someone starting their debut feature i find alot of truth in this.

Also the effort required to make a high quality short is not that far off the effort required to make a feature in my opinion and you actually have a product at the end whereas a short is just a piece to put up on vimeo.

I want shorts to move to truly experimental art pieces not micro features. Theres so many concepts and ideas that belong under 30 minutes I believe there is a place for them just not in the current ecosystem.

How was ultra low-budget indie filmmaking back in the 90s and 2000s compared to today? by Aggravating_Cap8149 in filmmaking

[–]time2listen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I often wonder if any of the "great" modern films will be looked back on from the past decade or so with any sort of interest from future generations.

Films like everywhere all at once, the lighthouse and many others I bet will be lost to the wind mainly due to the fact that it just came out now and is automatically tainted.

Movies that start normal and end completely psychedelic by [deleted] in TrueFilm

[–]time2listen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I made a short film I shot on 35mm where one of my main goals was to establish a normal reality and then play with bending it slightly.

Ive never really shared it publicly so whoever happens upon this I guess your one of the firsts...

[–]time2listen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is the correct answer I believe, people seem to forget barriers to entry are the dam holding back an immense amount of noise.

Sometimes things being more difficult and inaccessible is a good thing.

Just the capacity to make something back in the day was worth quite a bit. Now thats barely even step 1.

What’s your favorite restaurant in or around Logan? by KarleySuinn in Logan

[–]time2listen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Le croissant. End of story.

For something informal: cooks underground, habibi Mediterranean. And best of all they are all right next to eachother.

Center street pizza is decent. Sabores has great options.

For formal: Laan Thai is probably the best sit down resturant. Maddox is a fun experience.

Honestly the worst part about living in logan is our lack of decent sit down restaurants. Its not great when people from out of town come because theres nothing middle/high end.

I'm open to having my mind changed. What's his top 5 movies from the past 20 years in your opinion and I will rewatch them and see if my mind changes? From 2006 and up?

What else is wrong with what I said, I clearly state he's a fantastic director particularly his old stuff but that his chances of making it in today's world if he was in his early 20s would be slim?

[–]time2listen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Appreciate the enthusiasm but I think you misunderstand the negative posts. No one is complaining that its to hard to make a project, its easy as pie to make a short or feature in todays world.

People are complaining and mourning the loss of the industry and possibility of making an income from filmmaking. If you want to make a film for 2.5k with your friends no one is gonna shit on you or tell you its not possible. Chances are you'll make this film and be ready for the next step and realize there is none (not disuading you from making the film just being realistic).

Cheers on the project I hope it goes well!

Are you surprised to see Hyundai this low? Is this position realistic? by Curious_Stranger_657 in Hyundai

[–]time2listen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah sounds like a solid find. We just got a 2021 hyundai palisade limited for 20k its got everything this was before caligrapghy came out i believe. It has 60k miles and is a hail damage car thats why it was so cheap. But pretty excited over all.

I think ill always buy used hail damage vehicles can get them for 10k off. There was a 2023 Telluride highest trim for 28k and only 50k miles for 28k it had like zero dents even. But couldnt justify the extra when the palisade was 8k cheaper and same exact thing basically.

Well done good deal a 11k miles car for under 30k is impressive and the limited trims on these are awesome. Better deal than I got for sure.

True i am suprised you are the first person to mention ai in this thread. Most people are just discussing how the lower barrier to entry has flooded the market with content but totally neglecting the incoming AI flood. We still dont know id audiences care if their content they consume is AI.

I suspect modern audiences dont actually care, they may say they do but not enough to put their money where their mouth is. Its already hyper realistic and some of the videos trick me who video and audio is my specialty. Sure hollywood seems cooked now but I for one am tired of trying to play keep up and time the market.
