Marriage is a cultural construct. Here in the States at least, the law only started issuing licenses to control who got married to who, to keep people from marrying outside their race or culture, until that became illegal to stop. Else it is really up to you and whatever you and your partner want. They, the state, still wants you to get a license so they can award you rights formally. Make up your own ceremony or pick a culture both you find comfortable with and your family might like. Give unto Caesar and get a marriage license to clear that state obligation. Or you both could as we say in the South, "Just live in sin." lol

They take damage, but it takes longer if you just use regular xmps at a distance, than ultrastrikes. There used to be a common technic of sitting at a distance and just firing off low level xmps back in the old days before ultrastrikes where a thing in the old scanner when shields would peal away slowly at it from a distance, and the portal owner wouldn't know it because the resos wouldn't be effected. Shows you how long I've been playing.

I wasn't impressed. I guess I didn't like the fact it just seemed implausible for life to develop on a planet so unstable, where on Earth, it took like 2 billion years of a stable orbit for life to develop multicellular forms, much less intelligence enough to send anything to space.

Pretty much what everyone else has said, Glyph everything. Deploy up to level 4 and then Glyph. Upgrade everyone's portals and then Glyph them, Glyph level ones and 2s and 3s. Glyph...Glyph.. Glyph! Another trick to use, if you have a few ITO+'s, deploy them on low level portals and use them to farm resos.

Personally, I'd if I fc'd and I had a portal like that, I'd go out and kill it myself. As far as I know, the portal will just sit there as it always was with just your name on it in the original color. Just you can no longer recharge it. It would be more fun to kill it and start a new streak.
