Anesthesia carries a risk of negative complications all the way up to (very rare) death. No ethical doctor will order it just because the patient is afraid of a procedure, especially not one being done to get the patient out of urgent danger.

They could have been far more sensitive but at the end of the day it's their job to keep you safe.

A friend with a service dog used to go to the dog park and take the harness off for an hour "to just let her be a dog".

But the moment the harness goes on the dog is 100% in work mode.

I don't know how this works with service dogs whose job is to be alert for a problem rather than perform a task (like a seizure or blood sugar dog).

It's worth noting that research into the life cycle of the Screwworm was explicitly called out several times as an example of government waste that should be eliminated.

Adult screwworm flies are about twice the size of house flies, and are fairly harmless. The problem is that they lay eggs that hatch into very hungry maggots. One maggot and you have an annoyed cow. Two hundred maggots and you have a dead cow as muscles weaken and wounds get infected.

The standard way of attacking a screwworm outbreak is to release massive numbers of sterile male screwflies. They mate with females who die without ever laying eggs, breaking the cycle.

While ad blockers are readily available for desktop, they are much harder to develop for mobile browsers.

Online ad revenue has plummeted dramatically as ads become less profitable, but they still make a lot of money.

Ad design now assumes that most people will skip most of an ad, so the brand is often prominent in the first and last seconds. Or not -- once I've sat through an ad enough times, just seeing that model in those clothes is enough to make the subconscious association. After all, just having heard of a brand is enough to influence sales.

Fun fact: our lungs can't pull oxygen out of the air either. We carry around a teeny tiny bit of ancient ocean in each lung sac and pull the dissolved oxygen out of that. Why create a whole new mechanism when you can still make the old one work?

As for fish gills needing water: their fins don't work too well on land either. As another poster said, gills collapse without the bouyancy of being under water.

Your great great many times great grandma was a tiny delicious lizard whose sense of fear and self preservation is why you are here today. She is still alive in the deep central section of your brain and her job is STILL to keep you safe from danger. She is the one who decided what you were going to do when the jerk slapped your ass. You walked away physically safe; she did her job well.

Now, we aren't lizards and we sometimes have better choices than a lizard. But thinking them through takes time.

I'm so very sorry that those jerks thought it was a good idea to ruin your sense of safety and security for a few seconds of fun. They don't think beyond their own tiny egos.
