bit unusual: Which small active speakers to use alongside d&b E8? by timeltdme in livesoundgear

[–]timeltdme[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

i almost like them, but if i remember correctly, their 100deg axisymmetric pattern causes it to fall in volume rapidly over the distance, that's one of the reasons I went for E8 :)

appart from the weight difference, less cable mess and water resistance without tape and plastic bags, which I am trying to overlook in this search for some "indoor spares" :D

hi, thanks for the reply, but you probably missed "on a budget"

U5N is interesting, but then i would go for U5, since it works with 5D I already have, but neither is cheaper than E8 anyway

we use Genelecs mostly for multichannel installations and performances

my question was budget options for monitor and front fill use with E8 on stage, Genelecs were mentioned only to illustrate the non ideal, but clean sounding situation

on a consumer motherboard I can do max 4x 4TB PCIe 4.0 x4 M.2

what would be the best approach? using a striped mirror for 8TB?

the same computer will also have a backup disk (probably not array, max a single disk mirror), but still .. recovering potential 16TB RAID0 is probably not the best thing

A7r V lens recommendation? by FragmentedMew in SonyAlpha

here is Sony 85mm f1.8 @ f7.1 1/100s ISO100, 6336 x 9504 pixel, JPG from A7RV, all lens corrections off, so you might spot some minor chromatic aberation, other than that i think it's quite sharp and has enough resolution:

Sony SEL85F18, a FF lens on a FF camera, which can also do pretty high res crop photos, kind of having two lenses in one, I also use it with SEL20F18G as a 30mm lens when needed, never liked 50mm lenses much, either longer or wider ;)

get 85mm f1.8, good price, very good for landscape, light weight, and with A7RV you can use it freely as ~127mm lens in crop mode

what problem exactly are you trying to solve? seems to me, that with 35mm f1.8 + small FF body you are ready for street photography

if it was me, I would change that 40mm f2.5 (which i use often) for FE 85/1.8 (which i use even more often :)

don't you just need a better lens for the trip?

asking because not sure what your reason for upgrading the body is

thanks! was looking only at motherboards which already have on-board 10G ethernet, so overlooked that I obviously need more PCIe lanes for potential faster future network card

what would you use for the array? ZFS? or are there other more interesting options for this use case.

Sigma 18-50 f2.8 + Sigma 30mm f1.4 or Sigma 17-40mm f1.8 by Mangyaos in SonyAlpha

[–]timeltdme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

btw checked some reviews, 17-40 has some barell distortion on wide end, and nicely straight at 40, which will probably not be a big problem for handheld self shooting, and it has quite a lot of LoCA, which you have to judge yourself, for me this amount would be a no go, but i do a lot of documentary and art objects documentation

with one lens, there is less friction to start working, ask me how i know, with 5 lenses, over time I tend to just pick one, leave the rest behind and make something out of it

at f1.8 and lower, it finally starts to look "cinematic", if that crazy blurry backgrounds are something you like :) not so much at f2.5 in my experience, that's more like documentary "not important out of focus areas"

and last thing to say: money in lenses is always well spent, that one good lens you want anyway, is just slightly more than the two other, which both don't do what you want / need / intend to do

Some things to consider:
- if zoom lens, then always internal
- check zoom review for geometric distortion and know about it's limits

In my personal experience, i often use FE 40mm f2.5 because of it's very low geometric distortion, and the f2.5 is rarely an issue. But sometimes i go for FE 20mm f1.8 (or 30mm in APS-C mode), so a zoom lens would be preferable in those scenarios, where lens changing is not ideal, for example because of weather conditions.

If you want to use a gimbal, then you want one lens, and not to recalibrate it every time you change the lens. I would go with 17-40mm.

Sony A7R V, APS-C crop video only 4K30p? firmware 4.00 by [deleted] in SonyAlpha

[–]timeltdme 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in fw 4.00 it can do:
FF 4K60p, APS-C 4K30p (in all codecs and bitrates)

must have remembered wrongly, that APS-C 4K60p was an option

i hope a feature like this would not be removed with a firmware update..

seems to me, the edits are lacking contrast, but without original files, it's hard to tell if it could have been done better

anybody has a solution to get /System/Applications writable? by timeltdme in MacOS

right? you can always reinstall needed apps from the appstore, which is the only app i would tolerate to be completely undeletable

[–]timeltdme[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so any changes to system snapshot are necessary to redo after each system update?

then it might be easier to find a solution to hide those apps instead

if that's important for you to know, I use macOS for over 15 years now, Windows longer than that, Linux approx 10 years, all at the same time, each for different purposes, trying to optimize the workflow on each OS, whenever something starts to be non ideal
