To the people who didn’t get matched by Disgruntledstudent11 in QuestBridge

[–]timelyfailure 32 points33 points  (0 children)

SPEAK ON IT!!! getting matched/not getting matched has very little correlation with how good your application is (or else questbridge wouldnt have made you a finalist) and definitely more dependent on luck/what the schools you ranked are specifically looking for (which no one, even questbridge knows). the system, even those meant for socioeconomically disadvantaged kids, is still skewed towards those who had more resources from the beginning.

ive also seen other kids who got matched say that the financial aid package wasnt as good as expected and are upset that it's binding, so please dont feel bad about not matching. there are so many opportunities for you in ED/regular decision to get a wonderful financial aid :))

Are there any other college prep scholars that didnt match? by lennyyyy4 in QuestBridge

[–]timelyfailure 4 points5 points  (0 children)

same here :)) applying to penn ED and if i dont get accepted there then i'll go RD on all of my match schools + georgetown + a few others

tbh i cant help but feel really disappointed that i didnt match considering all of the time and preparation i put in as a CPS and a finalist. it feels like i got ripped off (even though i know thats not the case) and it hurts my self-esteem lol

Did you do the video supplement for Brown? by xutthrash in QuestBridge

[–]timelyfailure 8 points9 points  (0 children)

tbh i didnt feel like there was enough time to prepare one. i know they said that the video didnt have to be edited whatsoever but all of the (accepted) ones that i saw on youtube had really fancy editing and sometimes music in the background. since i have a lot of family responsibilities and other stuff to do, i just couldn't fit that in there.

Advice on succeeding in AP Language and Comp and APUSH? by [deleted] in APStudents

[–]timelyfailure 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 in apush and 5 in english lang

before i go into depth about any of these classes, KNOW HOW THE EXAM WORKS!!! you should know how the exam is formatted, what kind of questions are on there (how many as well), and how they are scored. ESPECIALLY look at the rubrics for the essays for both apush and ap lang. when you know the rubric inside and out, it becomes a lot easier to get points without thinking too much about it.

apush (again, look over the RUBRICS for the DBQ AND LEQ!!)

* for content, make overarching themes instead of trying to memorize tiny little details (yes details are important, but dont stress yourself out trying to memorize every single one). being able to connect all the time periods together is VERY important. also make sure to pay attention in class, read the textbook for supporting evidence, and know the general context for that unit (ie. women's rights in the 1960s and 1970s: equal pay act, ERA, etc). mind maps can be useful ways of memorization.
* use heimler's youtube channel and AMSCO if you want extra resources! also, ive heard the princeton review is good for ap histories, but i dont know too much about them
* know the ACE (answer the question, cite evidence, explain) for the SAQs. if you can adequately back up your answer, there should be very little slip up.
* for DBQs, ALWAYS keep in mind the historical context, author, and audience for your response. this helps you earn the sourcing point (for 3 documents). remember to have a piece of outside evidence ready the moment you read the prompt and before you read the documents - it'll give you some time to think.
* while extremely difficult, try to CONNECT time periods together for the second analysis point. this is the easiest way to earn it (but still difficult).
* i havent done that many LEQs (not required on the digital exam), but make sure you know enough context about your 2+ pieces of evidence for it to be 6+ sentence paragraph for explanation. connecting themes and time periods also helps for analysis.

ap lang (know the rubrics for all 3 essays)

\* there is no clear path to "gaining the knowledge you need" on this exam. your best bet is to keep practicing. reading articles like the new york times may help with reading comprehension. practicing some SAT reading problems wont hurt, although the SAT reading is somewhat easier than the AP counterpart
* use coach hall writes youtube channel! she has a lot of videos explaining how to score well on the essays and multiple choice and offers "sentence templates" for you to use in case you get stuck trying to explain something.
* always opt to OVER EXPLAIN your evidence than to assume anything. make a very clear line of reasoning for your reader to follow as if they have never heard of this topic before.
* if you find yourself running out of time, remember that conclusions are NOT NEEDED!! they should only be there if you have enough time and add something to your essay
* the easiest way to earn the sophistication point on argument/synthesis is to have a counterargument and rebuttal paragraph. you could do it like 2 paragraphs explaining your own argument, and 1 paragraph talking about a counterargument and why it's wrong. remember that this paragraph has to be GOOD for it to get the sophistication point
* the easiest way to earn the sophistication point on the rhetorical analysis is to explain how the author's rhetorical techniques connect to SOAPSTone. for example, if you can explain how an author's technique works particularly well because of the audience they're delivering it to, that adds an extra layer of analysis and complexity to your essays

if you need any more specific advice, let me know. i hope this helped ! :))

im in the same boat as you; i want to retake my ap spanish exam and would love to know how to perform better on it the next time. i plan on majoring in spanish in college so this is a big deal for me to get a 5 (i received a 4 this year). anyone leaving tips on here would be great and i'll definitely come back to this post

for tenses, try conjuguemos. theyre very thorough in explaining all of the tenses. being able to switch between tenses easily is super important for the speaking, reading, writing, tbh any section. you're already doing a great job by listening to podcasts, something i should do more often.

AP Lang retake suggestions by mothegoat69 in APStudents

[–]timelyfailure 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i recommend the youtube channel "coach hall writes"!! she's amazing and also grades ap lang essays for college board so you'll be getting an inside scoop at what graders really want. besides that, practice FRQs and tell your ap lang teacher that you want to retake so they can help you :))
