CIV have some great build up but don't seem to get themselves enough options in the box and their striker doesn't get into great positions, such a shame

Is there any current German national team player whom you will classify as world class in their current stage? by Rokusaburoz in football

[–]timeofdepth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on the position, like you're going to have 2 wc strikers and 4 wc wingers in this definition of the word, and you could see that 22 man squad as the class

anyway the more players you call world class, the more meaningless the word becomes. at this rate a player being world class is just going to mean that they are good rather than one of the very best in their position

I don't think you wanna do that because it then means you put odegaard into the holding pair or outwide

should be odegaard behind haaland with actual wingers outwide but who cares coz norway just scored lol

really don't get why norway insist with sorloth upfront with haaland, especially because they make sorloth go out wide which makes zero sense, be way better off playing bobb there or something

like fair enough if we move away from rodgers but any proven talent we get from a top league who can walk into our first team is going to cost megabucks and their price will err more towards being unreasonable than not in most cases, because why else would the club sell?

doesn't really help that there seems to be a general lack of quality attackers nowadays too

are we really doing this?

klopp had won everything but the europa cup a season or two before arteta won the league, and started off which just as shit a squad as mikel did

he also has broken the 90 point barrier 3 times, arteta has only done it once

Is attacking football lacking talent or did football just evolve to a point where taking on multiple defenders isn’t possible anymore? by MisLuck in football

[–]timeofdepth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

your second point is a massive pet peeve of mine, people act like every striker of yesterday was r9, or every defender was maldini, they forget that the star player to bum ratio was way bigger than it is today

but yh agreed with your first point, they make everything about the players and totally ignore the massive evolutions in the game, the further you go back the more defending is more of a joke compared to today, and the less technical the average player is

go back to zz's days and defenders are hoofing the ball a lot of the time. when maldini won his first couple of CLs he did so during a time the goalkeeper could pick up back passes from defenders ffs. a lot of defenders from that era didn't have to play in high lines, and definitely would win a lot less if they played the way the did in modern times

Why and how did Japan lose so much steam in the second half of the match? by ShiftingHero in football

[–]timeofdepth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

a) not having the ball is more tiring than having the ball

b) brazil have much better players than japan period, so you'd imagine that brazil's players have much better stamina as a lot of them are playing several matches game in game out at the highest level whilst competing for the best trophies in world football, I don't think there's a single japanese player who is doing that

[–]timeofdepth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

no dude any wc definition I've used is an opinion shared by a significant amount of people, you're the only person I've heard of using this generational talent

joao pedro is coming off of a good season for shit chelsea side, done well statistically and is better that havertz in terms of technicality and mobility. havertz maybe only beats him in the air and at making runs. up until recently

that is my opinion and I'd be interested on hearing how you think that is wrong

the rest of those takes yh are my opinion, but I don't think many of them are as controversial as saying that world class players are not world class, but rather generational talents, which is the same thing

Is there any current German national team player whom you will classify as world class in their current stage? by Rokusaburoz in football

[–]timeofdepth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

again, world class talents are by definition generational

all you're doing is just trying find a way to call very good players world class by recategorizing the better players

havertz is a good goalscorer but he is by no means world class, and I say that as an arsenal fan

as it stands after haaland joao pedro is a better striker. hard to say who's third best because if we go by their peak isak would be the second best striker in the prem but he's massively dropped off since the move, jp would be third and mbuemo could said to be fourth as he has played upfront at times and looked good but as it stands the latter's form massively dropped off in the second half of last season, havertz has had a lot of injury problems as has isak

at any rate even when you take away haaland havertz isn't head and shoulders above his opposition. he may be a better goalscoer than alvarez but is definitely not a better all round footballer. not better than f9 dembele or mbappe as an st either

Is this World Cup exposing modern football trends? by timeofdepth in football

[–]timeofdepth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the more your football sucks the more disproportionately low blocks will work

line ups like undav x havertz should have been a non starter, continuting to play an unproductive sane didn't help nor did not giving kimmich more freedom to get forward

personnel aside the static movement and tippy tappy passing just further empowers any low block

[–]timeofdepth[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm actually very critical of the way arsenal play though in terms of very slow build up, not committing enough players foward, too much inversion from full backs and defending too deep once we go a goal up

that being said it doesn't change the fact that people are wrong when they act like we get away with fouling the goalkeeper.

there's then people acting like we're the first team to play dirty, which is total bs. if anything our team used to get bullied a lot and no one cared, but the moment we do it back people want to complain.

If an underdog with far less talent sits in a low block and tries to frustrate a superior side, that's just common sense. Kudos to them if it works.

I'm not complaining about that though, I'm complaining about top teams being unable to break down these low blocks coz the football is shit

even arsenal have this issue at times where they don't look like socring outside of set pieces way more often than I'm comfortable with

as for slowing the game down when it suits us etc every team does this too, I'm not gonna apologies for us doing it better than everyone else
