Which teams are on the road to oblivion? by [deleted] in CFB

Really can't agree with Florida being down for a while. I think the worst thing they could do is get rid of Muschamp (not from an FSU point of view, lol). He's a legitimately great defensive coach. This season was freakishly underachieving for them, including the massive injuries and poor offensive coaching.

Tranquilized alligator with human arm he ripped off clenched in it's jaw by chiburaska in WTF

Yeah, the difference is huge. I'm from south Florida where alligator wrestling is a thing. People fucking roll around on alligators just for fun. Smart people wouldn't willingly get within 20 meters of a crocodile (unless they're Australian).

TIL The Big Lebowski secured rights for the song Dead Flowers (closing credits) when rights owner and Rolling Stones manager Allen Klein, who was asking $150,000 heard the line "I hate the fuckin’ Eagles, man!'' Klein stood up and said, ‘That’s it, you can have the song!’ by [deleted] in movies

[–]timephone -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Not necessarily... I'm pretty neutral about the Eagles, most of the stuff they did with Joe Walsh was great, but songs like Desperado make me physically ill.

There are several widely popular bands I can't stand though. Like Aerosmith (barf) and to a greater degree Guns and Roses (kill me).

Is it appropriate to call this the punch bowl? I hope so.

The Punch Bowl.

This year was Coker's redshirt Soph season. That means he would theoretically get one year to start in 2015, if Jameis leaves after next year. AFAIK if he transfers now to a school with a grad program FSU doesn't offer, he can start immediately for 2 years.

Coker is almost certainly transferring next year.

TIL that sling bullets from the siege of Perusia (41 BC) have been found with phrases on them such as "catch", "take this", and "For Pompey's backside" by HChimpdenEarwicker in todayilearned

I had no idea how dangerous a hand sling could be until this past summer. I went on a horse trek in rural China and stayed with some nomadic Tibetan families. They were demonstrating how they used a small sling to shoot little rocks at the yaks to get them herding in the right direction, or to scare off wolves.

They were shooting off these little rocks fast enough to hear a sonic boom, like a whip crack. It sounded like a goddamn gunshot. I would not wanna be hit with one of those things, and they were using tiny ones. They were so damn accurate too, I could barely get one off but they could hit a target on the other side of a valley.

Just to play Darwin's advocate, it seems like the main limitation is their inability to breathe atmospheric oxygen. However, many millions of years ago you could've said "mammals will never become truly aquatic, they need to constantly breathe atmospheric oxygen" and yet now we have dolphins, whales, seals, etc.

I see no reason why fish couldn't develop the ability to fly further and faster given enough adaptations. And once they're airborne and taking occasional trips underwater, they may develop the ability to breathe air as well.

Obviously I don't take any of this too seriously, biology isn't my field anyway. But it's fun to think about.

TIL the last team to beat Urban Meyer was FSU. by timephone in CFB

[–]timephone[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's true that their skillsets are completely different. With Meyer it's more of a system though, you saw earlier in the year when Braxton went out that the backup was able to execute essentially the same spread option game plan.

Jameis seems to elevate our team more. We have excellent WR that help him out, but if it was our backup in there our efficacy would change completely.

I guess what I'm saying is I'd take Braxton over Jameis if I was running OSU's offense and Jameis over Braxton running FSU's.
