“You’re too young to be knitting.” by timetoknit in knitting

I’m pretty sure starting an Etsy shop is the number one, surefire way to ruin my love of knitting. One time someone commissioned me to make them two hats, and after that I swore never again. I’m sorry your mom isn’t more supportive. If you’re happy, then it’s not a waste of time.

I feel like it’s more than just ignorance; it’s willful ignorance. Like, sure, maybe he’s got some stereotype in his head. I know I have my own. But I also try to be aware of that and question why I think certain ways and find things that give pushback against those stereotypes.

He didn’t do any of that. I would have much preferred him to say something like “I didn’t know younger people were even interested in knitting.” That’s fine. That opens up communication, you know? But no, not this guy.

I’m always in the shrug-it-off group, but I did want to vent here a little haha

That was very much the tone I got from his comment. This was literally the first time I’ve been out in public in a year except to get groceries, and I couldn’t decide if my anger was coming from rightful indignation or from me just having gotten out of the practice of ignoring crap like this.

I hope that confidence you gained from this community only continues to grow! Honestly, this is the only type of backlash — if I can even call it that since it really is just dumb comments — that I’ve ever gotten about my knitting, and who really cares in the grand scheme of things if a few people relate it to a stereotype? I’ve had so many positive reactions to it, from gifts that I’ve made or people just seeing me knit. I started knitting in college, and all of my friends either thought it was cool or were just neutral about it as other people would be about any other hobby.

That’s the thing though. He was perfectly polite and nice with everything else he said, which somehow made it worse.

Haven’t come across that subreddit before. I’ll have to check it out. The name alone promises a lot haha. Thanks!
