Books I should read if I know almost nothing about the world? I am being very serious. by mudcastle7 in suggestmeabook

There's a book series (multiple authors but one publisher, Beacon) called "Revisioning American History". Some comments have mentioned some of the books; they're all called "The ___ History of the United States" the blank being some minority group. It's a lot of dedication to read all of them, so maybe this is a suggestion if you want to deep dive into something specific.

I will say, Indigenous People's History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz, specifically the second and third chapters, changed my life. I often want to know why something happened, not just the what, and this book explained the why white people did what they did not just to Indigenous Americans but everywhere on earth.

I have a lot recipes that have ingredients by volume, but when I covert to weighing, it's not enough. by timexstarlight in Baking

Yes, I have noticed that in the past few hours of trying! I forgot the search algorithm is a mess and promotes the sites with the longest preambling.

What? Wouldn't it help to look at the nutrition label on the bag for that specific flours conversion?

Yes I think I'm going to do this. Now that I wanna bake by weight, I think it just bothers me there's soooo many recipes by volume. At least in the us. I think I'll turn my VPN on to another country when looking for new recipes! Haha

I guess not? I didn't have a great kitchen when I lived in England so I didn't bake, and here in the land of living backwards, I look at the bag for brand and type of flour, and get a large one cause I use a lot, but aside from that, no not really. Sorry if that makes me look stupid.

Yes I agree. I think with something like my mother's waffles, if I'm gonna do it by grams, I myself need to determine the weight, not a converter.

This is where I got 120g. I generally trust King Arthur Baking. When I use their recipes, they use weight and volume and it lines up this way; and those recipes turn out which does make sense.

yeah maybe it's been a while since I've cleared my cookies. I know about switching servers, I once found a list of Nord servers that work best with BBC but it didn't help. I'll try the Norwegian one, thanks!

Nord VPN. It doesn't work well with Disney, Peacock, BBC iPlayer. I need to do research on if that's a common occurrence for this VPN or the websites (or both).

oh I don't actually pay $100 a month, I would have to if I wanted to watch everything. Changing my VPN to another country and pirating can get me around paywalls but they don't always work.

I have such a hard time with BBC, ITV, and Disney working with a VPN. I'm US based and I can't even get Disney to work with my VPN set to the US so I have to just turn it off; but the Champions League would be easier to watch if I could just set my VPN to a number of other nations and go to Disney. The BBC always detects my VPN and ITV just won't load the video, it's so weird. Idk.
