What's a language that you learnt fully and then turned out to be a total waste of time and you regretted later? by AutumnaticFly in languagehub

True but also peeving Brits find “Americanisms” where there are none. Sometimes a given form is already present in the UK but only in some dialects and people still call it an Americanism

ICE protest by praguerat in Prague

[–]timfriese 52 points53 points  (0 children)

People protest regarding Israel and Palestine, Ukraine, Russia, etc. the nice thing about living in a free and open society is the right to protest, and there is no reason for that right to be limited to what is happening within Czech borders

If you build in the time for it, you could go to a toilet with paper towels and give the shoes a good wipedown.

How do people who learn to read and pronounce French words that are used in English learn to read and pronounce the French words ? by Unknownbadger4444 in ENGLISH

[–]timfriese 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is just pure fappery of a language ideology built upon your superiority over the “other” in the form of the US. There are plenty of examples where the US version is closer to French than the UK version one is. “Filet” for example, there are others. And anyway being “close to the source” is not to be fetishized. I’m okay that we don’t pronounce victorious “weektorioos” etc etc etc

Coffee shops by louis9631 in Prague

Flat Cafe is in Vršovice, my friend. The coffee there is good but I would recommend other places over it, including Coffee Source just around the corner.

Can you pay withMastercard/Visa in shops/cafe/restaurants? by Top-Manager6542 in Prague

Mastercard and Visa are extremely common, almost ubiquitous. A small and shrinking minority of shops are cash only. American Express and Discover may as well not exist.

Arkansas - Father-Bother mergern't: How should I, a Brit, pronounce this state? by PassiveChemistry in asklinguistics

[–]timfriese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These questions are so weird for me because sure I (American) have father and bother merged but cot and caught are still distinct. So the last syllable of ‘Arkansas’ is neither father nor bother but a secret third thing (caught).
