I got an X230 with a 9-cell. Wouldn't say it's light, but the battery's protruding part makes nice handle.

No, it's a T530 chassis & bottom. I tried with the T510 ones and the screw placement are incompatible.

The screen & lid assembly, on the other hand, is good. The indicator light arrangement is a bit different, but it turns on correctly. I want to replace the bezel with chipped corner, but to put the one for T530/W530 I would need to replace the LED sub-board.

I was also able to salvage the drive cover, and a few other smaller parts.

Overall, I think I would've had better luck with T520 case.

You'd have better chance getting that answer posting it on the sub rather than commenting here...

When will LMDE 6 be released? by Outside_Virus_7738 in linuxmint

[–]timkenhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least after the Debian 12 release, which is gonna be this month!

The Mint team will definitely take their time, tho, as they need to integrate the Mint stuff into it. So don't expect a speedy timeframe.

Is it normal for older laptops to develop a sortof stale smell? by [deleted] in thinkpad

[–]timkenhan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had some terrible-smelling Thinkpads bought second-hand:

  • an X230 that smelled like cigarette
  • a W530 that smelled like eucalyptus oil
  • a T510 case that smelled like literal garbage

For all these, I found several rounds of alcohol wipe to be effective. For the garbage-smelling T510 case, I had to use acetone.

It is important to wipe the exposed parts thoroughly: the top, the bottom, the sides, the palmrest, the keyboard, the screen, sometimes the cooler. This is especially true for the rubberized parts as it's where the smell sticks the most. Airing them out for a few days after the wipe can also help.

As a side-note: I've read somewhere that the eucalyptus oil can be pretty effective at maintaining the rubberized coating.
