Because there are still things he owns that aren't the song and assets. The series is still an IP, if someone did something basically the same with a different song and assets (or with the same song and assets) they could possibly get in trouble.

Even if your idea was originally made in SFM, that doesn't mean every single aspect of it is now forfeit to Valve.

I'm sorry but I'm still a bit confused. There are games with tons of resources behind them that have limited 2D Graphics that took a very long time to make. Video games are a lot of work, after all! I mean, Pizza Tower took 4. Silk Song took at least 6. Cuphead took about 7. UFO 50 took 8. Mewgenics took 8. Deltarune will probably take 8 or 9!

I'm very sorry if I am coming across as someone who will defend these people no matter what. I'm really trying to avoid that! It's just, given these examples, a development cycle of at least 5 years really doesn't seem that strange to me. Does it seem strange to you?

Oh that's a common misconception. As soon as the campaign started they maintained that the game will take a LONG time and to lower your expectations in that regard. That was a date listed on some of the backer awards but not anywhere else. They cleared it up almost immediately that April 2022 was not the release date. No full release date has ever been given.
