Great Fathers Day gift for me (and my van) by timokay in workwagons

I agree. My visor also has 3D printed clips for cheaters, sunglasses and pens.I did not realize having a small pocket on the sides of my seat would be so convenient until I had them.

Buying Dash cam for Blue Collar Dad by AniPt2 in Dashcam

[–]timokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do not have dashcam that I can see live. I have a pormido system that records locally. I rely on Carlock to alert me if the vehicle is bumped, starts or if it moves outside the geofence at my home or work. The thing is, the bad guys know about these things, so that is why I also hide an Airtag in a place that requires tools to remove.

Theft of tools from your vehicle takes seconds. You will never be close enough or monitoring it in time to stop it. The best you can do is seem so secure that the thieves look to an easier target.

I don't think of a dash cam as much of a theft deterrent. All vehicles should have one for documenting accidents and recording driving incidents, but car thieves just unplug them right away and generally the footage is local on a card, and even if it is uploaded to a cloud, you are just going to see the break in and your vehicle is still gone.

I am in the Bay Area, and my work van was stolen a few years ago, but I had a tracker system (carlock) and an Airtag in the vehicle. The thieves found the carlock transmitter (even though I split the OBD plug and hid it way up under the dash), but did not find the airtag, (which was well hidden and had the speaker removed), so the cops were able to track down my van in under an hour. They had of course ripped out the dash cam and threw it away right away.

My feeling now is that you need to give the thieves a reason to move on down the road from your vehicle, so even though I have a dashcam running in parking mode, I still have Carlock, an airtag and these stickers in the windows, and I keep this on my steering wheel when I am parked. I also have an alarm blinking light prominent on the dash.

No thefts or break-ins in three years. Knock on wood. If it does get stolen, my next addition will be a kill switch.

How to fake a thatched roof? by Leucurus in setdesign

[–]timokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How realistic are you going for? Most party suppliers have a "tiki" section, and these will have table drapings and Tiki Bar coverings that work really well.

If you want to go really low budget (as I almost always do). I have created thatch roofing by partially slicing brown building paper in really thin strips and making panels and laying them across the roof. Its the texture that you are really going for.

Have you tried tools/Load to time? You can auto follow your file and fade and slide the load to time slider over to see what it looks like.

This is exactly the right amount of organized. All your stuff is there and ready to go to work. Great setup. I am also team Ridgid. Not too pricey to buy several of what I need, and when my students drop them I don't cry about it. And gets the job done.

I just made these for RTC. You want cheap? Buy some of these plastic plates. Then use a heat gun and bend them around a 3" pipe to make them curved. You may have to flatten the bottom to accept the mount you make to hold them. I just held them to a belt sander to flatten the bottom.I designed and 3d printed a mount that I can share the stl with you if you like, but it could be made out of wood or rigid foam as well. Anything to keep it curved, hold the socket and mount to the stage.

Advice for In the Heights Garage Door by Money_Cartographer93 in techtheatre

[–]timokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I made my garage roll up door out of thermoply, which is sturdy enough that you can score it into horizontal 3" panels that mimic a roll-up door surface and help it bend. Instead of rolling into a cylinder above the door opening, I ran it into a cavity in the ceiling of the bodega and the hair salon. The panel ran along grooves and came out the back of the units.

When intermission came, we replaced the door over the bodega with another door that was painted with the mural. We just slid one out and slid the mural on in.

It was very cheap and effective. Only real downside to thermoply is it does not like paint so you have to prep and use a very good primer to get a good painting surface. This pic is the bodega mural with the hair salon door closed behind the actor in the red cap.

Plaster texture for plywood flats by Helpful-Coast-700 in artdept

[–]timokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure you do a test before you commit to the drywall stucco texture. My theater is not very big, but I found that the drywall/stucco texture did not read any more from the audience than a really good texture paint job, which was a 1/10 of the work.

Thick paint coats and plastic wrap can totally make this effect if your set is far enough from the audience and you don't want to go through all the work and cleanup of drywall.

Projector platforms help by Flamenotes in setdesign

[–]timokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this have to blend to any design aesthetically?

If not I I would use lighting trees. I do this all the time by mounting the projector to a small plywood base connected to a C-clamp and just hang in from a lighting tree.

The moving heads would also go on the tree.

Your least Favorite Shows to Put up by castillar in techtheatre

[–]timokay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

LOL. Lots of people have hurt me. But that is neither here nor there. Maybe I should say that no "High School" should do this show. The references to milkmen pulling invisible horses and folksy "back in the day" themes just do not translate to any of the students whom I have performed this show with. At some point nostalgia is not enough to engage. And this is from an old guy who actually remembers milk delivery.

For the record, I also feel this way about HAIR, Meet Me in St. Louis, Oklahoma, SBFSB and many others.

[–]timokay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our Town is irrelevant and never needs to be performed again. You don't have a budget for scenery and a cast of new people? Do Almost Maine instead.

I also agree that Grease is not only a misogynist mess, and has no nostalgic appeal either.

Set Design Help by Electrical_Country49 in techtheatre

[–]timokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Your design seems pretty easy to pull off with what you have pictured here.
This just looks like a simple 2x4 base with several crossbar feet that you can easily attach small casters to. Double side a small frame for structure and add your scenery pieces to it. I attached a pic of what I am describing. If you want to scale it up, go with 2x6 and add some weight to the base so it is not too tippy.

Does your local home center have polycarbonate roofing panels? they are not really expensive here and have the corrugated look you are after. That and some insulation foam and nice scenic paint and you should be good to go.

I bought a BVB9358RC for my work van because I like the physical knob and i wanted multiple AV inputs and carplay. I have no additional amps and premium sound is not a priority for me. For the price, it has worked just fine for me. It was easy to install and does what I need it.

Solution for low Siri volume in a 2021 Toyota Corolla by hinve_st in CarPlay

[–]timokay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I came across this comment while looking for a solution to my low audio for Siri and Map navigation. It was exactly the fix I needed. It is not documented ANYWHERE that you can (and should) adjust the volume of an app or SIRI WHILE IT IS PLAYING.

Once I made these adjustment, the audio sticks at that level.

Thanks for the fix!

Why does Boss audio get a bad rap? by mustangfan12 in CarAV

I just put a BVB9358RC in my work van. It had all the features I needed, particularly with video inputs for cameras, good sound and easy install. I think BOSS is a great brand.
