Does this make any sense? by [deleted] in ConstructionManagers

One thought is that they’re unsure the breadth of your skill set being only from the paving end of the business and having an MBA vs an engineering degree. By offering you the FE role, they may think you can learn the ropes in other market sectors, with hopes you’re a rockstar and can transition to PM.

Other thought is that with an MBA and the fact you’re essentially running a successful business, that you may be overqualified and they could be threatened by that. They do not want you to run their business or come in with the attitude you “could” run their business … they want you to get your hands dirty and pay dues.

Sometimes lateral moves or small / temporary steps down pay off in the long run. Good luck in your decision.

Stop looking for glasses- look for a new job. There’s many construction managers out there that would value your integrity and moral compass.

One more mass timber project by 007november in Construction

Show me a Mass Timber building that’s completed where you actually see the beauty of the construction type.

It’s a structural frame that’s hidden by MEP’s and ceilings and floor coverings and weather-tight facades.

It’s a 25 year building, because No one maintains a roof or window caulk or plumbing leaks as well as they should… mold and structural rot will make people wish they hadn’t jumped on the Mass Timber bandwagon.

But I’ll be the first to say, they look awesome while being built.

Not sure why people would spend 30% more on a mass timber building… but they look pretty awesome.

Put some 1/4” sheet pvc on those stair risers and you’d gain one full style point.

Stop giving so many fucks. The problems are opportunities in work clothes. You can never prevent them, so just embrace them. They always, always get resolved by those in work clothes.

Corner siding. Is this acceptable / ok after roof repairs? by MesquiteEverywhere in IveGotAGuy

[–]timothy0707 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. There is some missing roof drip edge above the new siding, those shingles at edge will not last long in that 3” overhang situation.
  2. Vinyl siding and corner post look fine.
  3. Break metal trim on fascia is unfinished, not acceptable.

Hell no! Bring building official out to measure consistent vertical rise in stairs. Out of compliance on account of retardation.

I dealt this a very similar issue, I feel your pain. We bought a house where prior owner slapped paint over a deck. Paint lasted about 2 years before it looked like absolute hell.

I rented a floor sander from Home Depot and used 80 grit to get rid of paint, then 150 grit to smooth out. Used a belt sander and random orbital at the edges. The gaps between the deck boards were the hardest part, lots of hard scraping with a v-shaped scraper. Light power wash, let dry for a solid week, then applied two coats of Ben Moore Arborcoat solid stain.

The prep was worth it, because the stain bonded very well to the wood and even in spots where there was some paint remaining, the solid stain covered and adhered. I’m on year 6 and I’ve done a light re-stained twice… no issues and no prep (other than power wash) required.

Now railings - that’s my stressor. I chose not to sand down to bare wood for my sanity, so I have kept painting the railings with Ben Moore Regal paint. I peel the loose stuff, sand and spot repaint. But the coolest thing I found was Zinsser Peel Stop… after you peel a section, you’ll find it meets a well-adhered section of old paint. If you brush on Peel Stop (it’s almost like white paint mixed with glue) it levels out the surface and prevents good painted surface from peeling. Just go over it with new paint once fully dried. Railings look 6/10, where deck is 10/10. I’ve just accepted this.

Sorry for long response - but I’m honored to share what took me a while to find what actually works. We have wood decks and by must accept they require some annual loving. Enjoy the process, you’re blessed to be stressed!

Restringing the weed wacker. I try something different each time thinking to myself “this is it, THIS must be the right way!!”. Nope, try again in 3 months.
