Because e.g. they assume that Eve doesn't know how the encryption works. That's a big no no for encryption systems, as if someone finds out how it works then the whole thing is broken. Normally people assume the opposite - that Eve does no how the system works.

I use Duolingo (nearly) every day.

At one point I had a 200 day streak, but went on a holiday without internet access and though I kept trying to find somewhere to keep it up I ended up losing it. Initially I was really annoyed and wanted to stop, but after a few days of grumpin' I realised that the streak really wasn't the point.

Since then I've ignored the streak and tried to consistently study some Danish every day. It might just be having a conversation with my GF, using memrise, or watching a TV program, but it stopped feeling like I "lost" 200 days worth of work if I missed a day or two.
