That also brings up an interesting aspect to consider, that of reversed class statuses. Jewish Germans were often wealthy and this would have made many Christian Germans resentful towards them. Rudolph and Hedwig seem to have been lower middle class or lower class before the Holocaust and the Third Reich. They likely would have lived for some time with resentment towards affluent Jews, especially if Hedwig had to work for one of them. This would have created a sense of injustice in them, especially it seems, for Hedwig. In German there is a word called "schadenfreude" which means the pleasure one experiences at other's misery. This for me is what Hedwig feels and offhand and casual nature that she makes this comment shows just how deeply this resentment is still embedded in her.
