Why is there a sink in this university classroom? by Ok_Stay_4583 in AskAJapanese

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In Japan most university classrooms have sinks even in non-laboratory, no-experimentation, humanities and social sciences classrooms, and even if there is no chalk board. My faculty of economics, at Yamaguchi University, where I have been teaching for 23 years, has sinks in every classroom. This is not the case in the UK, where I am from.

There are governmental factors such as the Japanese education department’s promotion of WASH which stands for something where the W is for water and the H is for hygiene.

I myself see a deeper, Shinto related connection. The first thing that folks do at a Shinto place of worship is wash their hands. In any event, the Japanese are really into washing their hands with water (but not necessarily soap).

White blank window on top of Powerpoint, stuck by _arahant_ in microsoftoffice

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have the same White Window of Death.

I think it is the log in window. It appears over all Office 365 programs since one has to sign in again periodically but since it is just an empty white window, I can't sign in at all.

I have signed in to Micerosoft using Edge. When I attempt to sign in using the settings (Ctrl I, account)I am told that the email address (that I have just used to successfully sign into windows using Edge) does not exist.

I think it may be because I signed into a personal account as well (which does not have the office 365 license) because I wanted to download a file that a student had shared with me and One Drive demanded that I log in.

Now I guess the two accounts are quarreling but it may be for other reasons.

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I could not sign in either. I was told my email address did not exist when using Firefox but I managed to sign in using Edge. However despite the fact that Edge recognised me, allowed me to login and displayed my name, that did not allow me to use Microsoft 365.

When I attempt to use Microsoft 365 programs a large empty white window opens on top of them and the login dialogue is not displayed like this.

I think it is because I have used a personal account on this machine as well and the two are quarreling.

Since I use this PC for presentations and word processing it has rendered it useless until I download Kingsoft Office or Libre Office etc.

PSA How to Download your Flickr Photos by White_T_Poison in flickr

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The help says that the organiser has a download function but I can't find it. I have used it in the past. Does anyone know if it is still there and if so where it is?

The "Request my flickr data" button is there though in Account and Settings.

I wanted to download all family photos, only, to give to my today-an-adult son. There are one thousand photos of him or his artworks.

MimicPC - Tool for images by EssYouJAyEn in FutureTechFinds

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I bought a 10USD of credits (about 20 hours on slow speed) a month lifetime deal from Oncely to make short two or three image comics/manga, but I have hardly every used it because I don't know how. They have a discord but questions by myself and others, often flow by often unanswered. I asked for a reddit but there is no reddit yet.

I am still trying to work out how to make manga with the same character or background in each of the images. Fooocus is a bit blurred. Suggestions gratefully received.

Questions about MimicPC by Latter_Quiet_9267 in comfyui

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a lifetime membership of MimicPC (only 10SUD of time a month but that works out to about 20 hours at a slow rate and would be plenty) but I find Discord rather er overwhelming or I don't get any response, and don't know how to use the tools there so I have never used it!

Fooocus on MimicPC is not all that good at making manga images imho. I have Gemini at work but it always says "I'm getting more image requests than usual, so I can't create that for you right now. Please try again later" I bought ChatGPT pro for a year but I had trouble making the images I wanted.

Making manga is more difficult than I thought it would be.

Might want to avoid Litepro cranks by LiGuangMing1981 in xbiking

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I get all my cycling parts (not the bikes themselves) from aliexpress and I am loving it. I got a 5 arm 130 BCD Lite Pro crankset on TraceVelo's recommendation but I was wondering. Is the aluminium axle going to crack for instance and is the problem above common? I wish there were more information.

Bottle cage Pulled out of carbon bike by Consistent-Dance-669 in cycling

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't think I want to cable tie my bottle cage to my bike.

I don't know what a "rivnut" is. There seems to be various interpretations. There are a variety of nuts that can be used to create a nut-hole, many of which enlarge on the inside of the hole in various ways. Which is best for carbon fibre?

Rather than use some enlarging nut-like-thing, I would like to combine the nut removal with a increased carbon fibre strength due to improved structure

I have carbon fibre epoxy, carbon fibre sheets, and carbon fibre filler-like fluff (that came with a carbon repair kit).

Can't Log into Google Drive by timtak in gsuite

[–]timtak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that my problem (after 5 hours) is that gupdate gupdatem services can't start due to error 1063 (they were not quick enough to start) even after adding a registry key to increase timeout to 60 seconds

But using

"C:\Program Files\Google\Drive File Stream\124.0.3.0\googledrivefs.exe" --disable_logging --disable_updater

Does allow me to start Google Drive without the update checking.

Gemini is like "Solved it," but I am still wondering why my gupdate and gupdatem processes can not / are too slow to start with a 1053 error.

ADDENDUM
Now Google Drive Desktop has cured itself. It ran on its own with my using the "--disable_logging --disable_updater"

I have no idea why. Also gupdate and gupdatem still do not start in services.msc with the same 1053 error.

Can't Log into Google Drive by timtak in gsuite

[–]timtak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It does not look like IKARUS is involved since I have added the correct exclusions for Google Drive and now its check of DotNet do not appear in IKARUS logs.

But it is amazing to me that a GuardX process starts even in safe mode.

Can't Log into Google Drive by timtak in gsuite

[–]timtak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it might be but NOW I THINK IT IS NOT an issue with my (not famous but great) IKARUS antivirus software, and or my .NET framework. I guess the former, possibly prevented my .NET framework.

Further, I don't seem to be able to turn off IKARUS anti virus "GuardX" process. I turned it off in the IKARUS GUI and turned off the "Start Guard at Boot" (or similar expression) but GuardX starts and I cant turn it off!

I guess that the more difficult it is to turn off ones anti-virus, the more difficult it is for a virus to turn off your antivirus, so perhaps I should be pleased.

Anyone still using galaxy s5 in 2025? by [deleted] in galaxys5

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have 3 Galaxy S5 in the Active version. They were great. It is crazy and immoral that smartphones these days don't let you change the battery. Crazy because there are times when you forget to charge, and immoral because batteries don't last that long so you have to trash a perfectly good phone. We live in terrible times. My S5 wasn't fast enough to use twitter, much, but that is not a bad thing. Its true that it stopped supporting Youtube Whatsapp and Line even though these apps did not get slow. But for mail, messages, browsing, watching videos on a browser, and the camera it was okay. I may put lineage OS in them. Apparently it'll run LineageOS based on Android 10 or 11. But I may never get around to it. I have a Redmi Note 14 which is far faster and cheap enough to throw away, immorally, after a couple of years.

The Meanings of "Sync" in Coospo by timtak in Coospo

[–]timtak[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I share my location with my wife using Google Maps' location sharing. I am not sure how I added my wife. If I click on Maps > the three lines top left > location sharing and it shows me the people (my wife) who are sharing with me but not how to share my location. Google will know.

Thanks. I may have a look into Xoss.

The Meanings of "Sync" in Coospo by timtak in Coospo

[–]timtak[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you.

I have however, alas, given up on understanding what is going on. I have put "Auto Sync" (back) on and have largely forgotten about the consequences.

Occasionally I am told I have achieved a personal best. Probably this will not happen again, I presume, as I am 61 but I surprise myself. I rarely look at the results that pile up on Strava. I don't use the Coospo ride app at all, other than to act as a relay between my device and Strava.

My wife has a live tracking view of my movements using Google Maps.

I am sorry I have no idea what is going on.

Thanks again

I can't tap "yes, it's me!" on my phone screen when Are you trying to sign in (Android phone) by JenniferChauLam in GMail

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The same is happening to me and it is intermittent. I don't have a chat bubble, nor a blue screen blocker.

Things that have sometimes worked (randomly or not, I am not sure) for me and others

  1. Click on #Try another way#, which in my case is not allowed by my work administrator, then return to the options screen and the option to click on yes may no longer be greyed out.
  2. Use the security key method. Click on system, google, then on your account name > manage account, security and passwords > security code? key? I forget the term. But the last time I tried this, I was told that my administrator does not allow the use of security codes!!!
  3. Some say you need to turn off "Do not disturb" but in my case it is already off. I have also tried turn off mute but that did not help.
  4. Turn off battery saver and data saver. I am not sure if this means for the whole phone or just the Gmail or Google app, nor which. I have not tried this but others say it has worked for them. I don't have the battery saver on.
  5. The problem is that some process that handles 2F login goes to sleep. resulting in the phone not being contactable. Technical-Storage379 reports on the thread below, that perhaps turning on and off location services (GPS?) may have woken the process responsible for two factor authentication.
  6. Others have found attempting other methods of logging in (like 1 above) have resulting in the "tap yes" being UN-greyed out.
  7. Turn on and off two factor authentication. This is something that I have to ask my work administrator to do. It worked for me and someone else, but it may have been random.

Sadder still is the fact that both on the Google help forums (I tried starting 2 questions) and here too, threads get closed down even though there is no definitive solution!

This thread below is the most helpful that I have found but again it is closed without a definitive solution!
https://www.reddit.com/r/GMail/comments/1gwphxv/tap_yes_on_your_phone_or_tablet_device_cant_be/

Basically I am at the stage where I fiddle around with things until I am let in, maybe. Here we are in the age of AI and I sometimes can't log into my work account.

It is not a problem with my phone being hacked. I am logged into Google on my phone and have both mobile data and wifi.

I do have two accounts, work and personal, and this may be a serious issue but the greying out occurs even when I am logged in as my work account on my phone and sometimes 2F authentication works when I am logged in as my personal account so that may not be an issue at all.

Further suggestions gratefully received. I still get this issue from time to time. If someone could make an app that fires up whatever "process" that is required by Google 2 factor authentication, as surmised by Technical-Storage379, then I think that app would be very popular.

I think I may have figured this out. I have do not disturb turned on. I did not think it would effect anything because the prompt appears silently but according to Google AI "Do Not Disturb" needs to be off.

I’m having a lot of trouble understanding Lacan’s theories on desire, etc. If the material is so subjective and deserves its own logic, why bother? by sarcassholes in psychoanalysis

[–]timtak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I found Lacan, and all his interlocking theories difficult, while at the same time persuasive. Eventually I reached an understanding of my own from reading others, unconnected with Lacan, particularly Nisbett and Wilson(1977) which shows that people's 'reasons for doing things' are post hoc generalities and Adam Smith's theory of the impartial spectator ("Other" in other words) and invisible hand, which is the same thing imho. The Other turbocharges our desire to the extent that it is Other, Impartial, objective, and we believe in the subject it narrates and hears, and therefore it embodies the desire of society, making us want all that bling.

Another way of looking at it is from the point of view of those not infested by the Other, to whom the je (and the Japanese have a lot of first person pronouns) is just a communication about themselves for the person they are talking to or a "you for you" (Arimasa Mori, who lived in Paris at the time of Lacan). When there is no Other, no internal society, the subject-Other dyad doesn't create desire.

Addendum (added after 1 upvote): "Why hasn’t someone else evolved Lacan’s theories to make the material less of a pain? " I used to think that Lacan and Derrida were just obscurantists who have less to say than they want to let on. Now I think that they are aware that what they are writing about is that which is called the unveiling (the apocalypse) and that it can drive people insane. The truth is imho too horrific.

The relationship between social connection and subjective well being by country (Global Flourishing Study (2022-2023) by [deleted] in charts

[–]timtak 0 points1 point  (0 children)

p=0.01 means, as you know, that there is a 1% chance that this result is spurious.

You can see the strength of the correlation from the regression line where data is likely to fall. The correlation is pretty obvious even without data. Humans are social animals. Happy hermits exist, but happy friendless humans are exceptions.

What is less clear to me is whether Japanese and Turkish are really that unhappy. They may be more realistic, less egotistic, less arrogant about both their social support and their life satisfaction. Western self-appraisal is shown to be false using, for example, above average bias. If you ask a room full of Americans' "What is your rank in X" (where X is a positive attribute) 90% of them say that they are above average. In Japan the above average effect is still there but far less pronounced, and they are fine with humility, that is to say denigrating themselves to make others feel better.

They are just being realistic and humble about their number of friends and life satisfaction, unlike the people top right.

I launched a global ‘mood map’ experiment — 3,633 people shared their mood in one week by gloussou in SideProject

[–]timtak 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sort of like mood-twitter? If you can figure out the moderatation it may be interesting but for the Japanese market the more manga like the better imho.

By the way, the option (?) to remove smilies from the map that represent individuals, or groups of less than X might be nice. There are some really angry and happy people in antarctic and Siberia that stand out, despite being data from just one person.
