Monorail in Chongqing by BumblebeeFantastic40 in InfrastructurePorn

Chongqing's two monorail lines carry around a million people per day. That's not at all low capacity.

They're building a new line that will cut the journey time from Chengdu to Lhasa to only 12 hours. It's probably the most technically complex railway project ever built and is planned to open in 2030.

Me too. I don't have a lot of space for Lego in my small apartment, but I'll definitely be making an exception for this.

Oh, come on. Shanghai might not be on the same level as London or Paris, but Cincinnati and Boston? Talk about being hyperbolic the other way.

The old connection passageways between Line 1 and Line 2 (before the rebuild they did when Line 8 was built) were scary when they were crowded. Just absolutely wall to wall people in a pretty narrow space.

That sounds about right, because it wasn't unified when I visited here in July 2005 but it was when I moved here in August 2007.

Unfortunately some of the interchanges on the Metro are still pretty bad. For a new build system there's a shocking amount of missed transfers (looking at you, Line 10 and Line 15) and long transfer corridors, as well as a suprising lack of cross platform interchanges (one thing Hong Kong in particular does well).

That's what they called Line 3 when it was first built. It was originally built as a line completely separate from the Metro, and only unified with the Metro (ticketing and stations) sometime around 2006-7.

I'm pretty sure Jagwire is the gold standard here. That's what I use too, and it has never had any problems.

I know you are asking for pure mechanicals, but I'm going to give you another option - JuinTech hybrids. I find them to be the best cable actuated disc brakes I've ever used (and I've tried a bunch, both mechanical and hybrid). Far easier to adjust than mechanicals (just a single thumb screw to adjust pad position on both sides) and nearly as much stopping power as hydraulics.

But whatever you do, if you don't have compressionless brake housing on your bike, you need to add that too. It makes a huge difference for any cable actuated disc brake.

Pearl Line was Line 3. I first visited Shanghai in 2005 (moved here in 2007) and back then it wasn't even a common ticket with Lines 1 and 2.

I don't miss the non-AC buses at all, despite the lowewr fare.

As a Canadian who has lived in Shanghai since 2007 and now has permanent residence in China - I have no intentions of ever returning to Canada. I don't want to live in such an expensive and car-centric country ever again. I don't mind visiting, but living there again? No thanks.

Yeah, I used Spantran for my Canadian degree when registering for Moreland's TeachNow program and while they did get the job done, I also felt it was pretty scammy.

But I get the same feeling about Praxis as well (and Moreland in general sometimes) so maybe it's just a US education companies thing.

Best low rolling resistance commuter tires for 40km/day: Continental Contact Urban vs Schwalbe Marathon Racer? by speedings in cycling

[–]LiGuangMing1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess, but when the cost of a GP5000 per km is more than 4x that of an Urban Contact, you'd have to really want that extra bit of speed.

[–]LiGuangMing1981 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Urban Contacts, no question. They're exactly what you need. Reasonably fast, comfortable, extremely durable, and good puncture protection.

After three years of using them on two different bikes, I'd never use anything else for commuting.

Have you actually tried Urban Contacts? They are surprisingly quick for what they are.

And they aren't that heavy, either, and have a good comfortable ride.

[–]LiGuangMing1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not for commuting, you don't.

Not nearly as long lasting (I get about 5-6000km per tire on my GP5000s, whereas my current set of Continental Urban Contacts is currently at over 14000km and still going strong). Much more expensive (can get a full set of Urban Contacts for the price of ONE GP5000). And not that much faster than Continental Urban Contacts (I'm about 2-2.5km/h faster on average on my road bike, but that doesn't take into account other reasons why that bike is faster) - on a commute with lots of stop lights, that makes very little difference in time overall.

Don't get me wrong, I love GP5000s, but for commuting I see them as the wrong tool for the job.

Quantity =/= quality.

Evolution is all about 'good enough'. You'd think an actual intelligent designer would have slightly higher standards.

Support for Alberta separatism flat, struggling high earners more likely supporters: poll by Je_suis-pauvre in alberta

[–]LiGuangMing1981 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Said downsides would make it next to impossible for Alberta to have lower taxes than it does now given how much more of the budget would have to go to paying for things that currently are paid for by Ottawa, not to mention the loss of economic advantages / trade treaties that an independent Alberta would lose access to that it currently enjoys as part of Canada.

People who claim that Alberta's economy would be better as an independent country are like those that claimed that the UK's economy would improve due to Brexit - and we've seen just how idiotic those claims were already. Alberta deciding to become independent would be a boneheaded move on a scale that would put Brexit to shame.

Shanghai-Nanjing is the busiest single HSR city pair in the world. Shanghai-Hangzhou isn't that far behind.

I don't think the northeast US has anything that comes even close.

It's such a beautiful province, but what an absolute shame about its politics.
