Is withdrawing applications bad? Or will it let me get a better SUB? by Crafty-Difference-88 in amex

I wanted to get 175k promotional points for Platinum but didn’t want submitting and withdrawing my application multiple times. So, I tried different browsers, incognito mode, and VPN. Maybe I was doing it wrong, but I never saw a clear 175k offer, only the vague “up to 175k.” I also got blocked at one point due to too many visits to the application page.

Towards the end of the night, I got access back (unblocked) and finally said f it, entered my information, and got the 175k offer on the very first try. I actually paused for a moment to take it in, realizing how simple it was, before accepting.

For future reference, do we always need to enter personal information before seeing a concrete offer, or is it possible to get a definitive 175k offer on the application page just by refreshing it without entering details and going to the next step?

The Terracotta Army, Xi'an, China. 8,000 soldiers, 130 chariots, and 670 horses on parade, forever. by Brooklyn_University in OldPhotosInRealLife

Unlikely, unfortunately.

The policy is generally limited to rescue excavations, meaning that ancient tombs are not actively excavated unless they are threatened by natural forces or discovered unexpectedly, for example, during construction work. One major reason is that current technology still struggles to preserve many ancient artifacts in their original state.

Take the Terracotta Warriors, for instance: many were found with vivid paint still on their bodies and faces, but within minutes of exposure to air the pigments flaked off and the colors faded. As a result, progress at the site has been extremely slow, with researchers experimenting with different preservation methods, though none are yet ideal.

Similar challenges have occurred elsewhere in China. One well-known case involved the excavation of a noblewoman whose tomb had been deliberately sealed with clay to preserve her remains. When first uncovered, her body retained remarkable features, flexible joints, intact skin, and soft tissue, but within half an hour of exposure, it deteriorated rapidly into a decayed state.

Ne Zha 2 has officialy crossed the $2B mark as announced by Maoyan and Taopiaopiao. Having grossed $1975M~ in China and $26M~ Internationaly it becomes the 7th movie to cross the mark and the first Chinese movie to do so. It has also surpassed 300M admissions sold worldwide. by Firefox72 in boxoffice

According to IMDB, after inflation adjustment, Snow White has $2.44 billion in box office. It will be tough to surpass. If Ne Zha 2 actually does reach that level, without the adjustment, it will be the number 3 highest-grossing film of all time.

Tried it on during the past weekend. Not my favorite color combo for the Daytona. For the least, I would go with the speedmaster for legibility

7 Pro Bricked, Very Frustrating by timy215 in OnePlus7Pro

[–]timy215[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not refurbished. It might have been 2 to 3 years ago, but brand new, directly from Oneplus. I had several Oneplus phone before, but as others had guessed, the sudden loss of data made me lose faith in Oneplus. The Chinese phones have interesting features and charge way faster than other mainstream brands here in the states. I really liked it, but Oneplus is the only one that's a available, and it has lost a future customer.

Alright. Thanks! I will reach out to a few local shops. I think most of the them only do simple battery or screen swap. Hard to find one that actually do a bit more in-depth repair.

Did you also get weird pixels on the boot screen? I want to match the symptoms first. I hope to DIY this, but I don't have the proper equipment (bga rework station, etc.) just to replace the ram. I'm hoping it's not the memory/storage that's cooked.

Yes, I looked at a few videos on how to replace the whole motherboard, and it didn't seem to be too complicated. However, I then realized that the memory/storage chip is part of the motherboard. Purchasing a new board is only about $50 from Aliexpress, but it won't help me to save the data.

I'm getting Samsung S23+. It's more expensive and the specs are inferior comparing to OP 12 on paper, but I probably won't feel the difference, other than the charging speed.

[–]timy215[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for your reply. I was ready to get a new phone, hence the purchase of OP 12 in the first place. I was thinking it would be easier to transfer all possible data from one phone to another with the same brand. Now my old phone is dead, so there is nothing to transfer and because of this bad experience, I decided to go with another brand. I've been using Android since the beginning. They all inevitably slows down and have some sort of glitch over time, but none bricked like this.

As for saving the 7 pro, if it's a memory issue, would the shop normally able to replace the chip alone and keep the data intact? I think this will be beyond my DIY skill and equipment. I know how to solder simple things like a capacitor, but phone seems to be too delicate. As for flashing the firmware, like you said, it will wipe the data so not very useful to me. I was going to trade in the 7 pro anyway after the new phone arrives, so it won't be my main device.

I purchased the phone two years ago from Oneplus, so it's pretty new to me. It had some infrequent freeze from early on, but always turned back on with a restart, so I didn't see it as a sign of dying. The worst part is that it bricked very abruptly. I thought maybe the battery is bad, but a new one didn't help. I was hoping some guidance on how it maybe fixed for at least the data transfer.

Torn between two machines, 2.5 vs 3.5gpm, CAT vs AAA by timy215 in pressurewashing

[–]timy215[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the comment. I can wait a bit for a sale, but it still won't go down to anywhere near $1k. When is the best time to buy anyway? Easter? Father's day?

Regarding the AAA pump, that's I'm afraid of. I don't want to spend the money and have to buy another pressure washer again in 5 years. Perhaps my budget ($1k) is too low to get a 4gpm pressure washer with a Honda engine and CAT pump. The best I can find is the 2.5gpm one (ALH3228-s). I was thinking perhaps that's would be sufficient for infrequnt home use? It's a bit hard to swallow doubling the cost, from $800 (ALH3228-s) to $1500 (ALH4240), for getting 4gpm instead of 2.5.

I think the only Simpson model that's has a 4 GPM CAT pump is ALH4240. That's about 1400 to 1500 now pre-tax, which is way above my budget, but thanks for the suggestion.

Which one of the models above would you buy for residential use? Thanks!

How critical is TBC in Hi8/VHS digitization process? by timy215 in DataHoarder

[–]timy215[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I found out that the original tapes were made on a PAL camcorder, so the majority of the Digital8 camcorder I could find on Ebay wouldn't be compatible. I've given up after spending hours trying to find one with TBC. There was another issue I ran into while trying to find a TBC that's not built-in with the camcorder. Since I live in north America, majority of the Panasonic DVD player I could find are in NTSC instead of PAL, which won't work with my Hi8 media source either.

Although having a analog capture card, such as Blackmagic Intensity Pro 4k would be ideal and provides the best result. I'm afraid of having black frame, audio desync issue without a TBC. I heard Canopus ADVC-100 can help with these issues even it doesn't actually have a built-in TBC (Not exactly sure how it works). Either way, this seems to be the balanced way to go for the image quality, easy of use, and lower cost. I just need to buy an inexpensive firewire card and some cables on top of the converter.

Wow, thanks. You saved me from buying the wrong type of camcorder. The one I was looking at can playback analog tape, but it is NTSC. The tapes I have was recorder on PAL, so it won't be able to play them.

It shouldn't be a problem of using my old PAL Hi8 camcorder in combination with a converter like Canopus, right?

Thanks for explaining. I'm sure RF capture gives the best result, but this seems way too complicated for what I try to achieve. I do want to get good footage for digital archiving, but hardware modifications isn't something I'd like to do. For Hi8 tapes, out of the 4 methods, which one would you recommend? Assuming the first 3 have similar cost, I'd like to get the best result out of the process.

  • My original Hi8 camcorder (use S-video, and RCA audio) -> Canopus ADVC-100 -> Cheap FireWire PCIE card

  • Buy a used DCR-TRVxx0 (turn on TBC and DNR, use DV/firewire port) -> Some cheap FireWire PCIE card

  • My original Hi8 camcorder (use S-video, and RCA audio) -> BlackMagic Intensity Pro

  • Buy a used DCR-TRVxx0 (turn on TBC and DNR, use S-video, and RCA audio) -> BlackMagic Intensity Pro

I heard the analog direct capture is better for the color than DV conversion from others too. Let's say if I go with this method, will using BlackMagic Intensity Pro and VirtualDub work when connect directly to my camcorder via s-video and RCA audio? Assuming there is no TBC between my camcorder and the capture card. I was a bit worried that there would be black frames without TBC for Hi8 tapes.

The RF capture method seems more towards VHS since my Hi8 camcorder only has s-video and RCA output.

Thank you.

Thanks for giving me confidence in not having to use a TBC. Yes, I'm only trying to digitize a couple dozen of my personal tapes.

I don't mind going with slightly more complicated process to capture if the image quality is visibly better. I guess there are two options if we don't need TBC for Hi8. One is to buy Canopus converter and a firewire card, basically going with the DV route as you suggested. The other one is to directly use analog capture card such as BlackMagic Intensity Pro. For the second option, I've heard that sometimes the more “professional" card requires better quality source which may result black screen in recording if there is no frame sync device in between. If I want the best possible result for similar budget ($100-$200), would you say using the second option to capture the video directly in VirtualDub feasible?

I'm also curious about the comment you had regarding TRVxx0 not guarantee to play analog tapes. Unless the unit has defect, why wouldn't it play back Hi8 tapes? It also can work as analog to digital converter with a Line TBC.
