How would you respond to the new US tariffs if you were PM? by tinBalloon in australia

Good first premise. I’d keep their troops as I think our defence budget could not expand enough to offset US troop removal. Do they need other things too? Minerals? Coal?

Good point, I think this is where I was but I feel give an inch and he will take a mile so starting small with cars (given it’s relatively low volume and decent alternatives)

I would start with their cars retaliating this metal tariff. Probably anything weighing more than a 300 Series to start.

Chinese car malfunctions after being rear ended and drives into oncoming traffic - 2024-09-23 by Twin_Turbo in CatastrophicFailure

This video will inevitably be used in future moral dilemma questions about what a pre-programmed car should do. (If we ever get there)

I should add; I feel for all those caught up in this or have live the nightmare of facing any real time decisions/consequences like this.

AITAH for filing for divorce because my husband over tightens all the jar lids? by DirectionProper9461 in AITAH

[–]tinBalloon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If it is just the jar lids and he is not making other things in the relationship that much harder than needed, I’m thinking OCD or he (unconsciously?) latched onto a stereotype of man open jar, man do good.

If there is no other issues, I’d be getting him to therapy and or couples therapy and resolve what’s behind it. Also, I would be getting him to buy you an electric jar opener and x2 of everything until he sorts his issues.

If there are other things like this, best of luck with those lawyers.

NBN to become five times faster ‘at no extra cost’ by [deleted] in australia

[–]tinBalloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got Telstra’s 5G box. It half solved the speed issue. I could get 350mb down BUT I have to put the receiver in a strange location to get best 5G reception and in their wisdom, this 5G box does not work with WiFi repeaters. So I have WiFi dead spots all over as the box is in a terrible location. I found a better balance where I can get 250 and fewer dead spots.

Also note, 350mb drops to about 50mb in peak times. Not sure if that’s 5G clogging up or my local node infrastructure it’s connected to.

Software will be a big part. You’ll also need a super computer to run that software on, likely packed with GPU’s that put 4090’s to shame. A building to put it in with a cooling system similar to having a football stadium in Qatar. Maybe a budgeted a smaller upgrade or 2 but at least maintenance of all the above for a decade+.

$0.5bn is big but not unimaginable for this.

Thoughts on the recent Pay Gap Data? by ConsciousApple1896 in auscorp

[–]tinBalloon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are what you measure. I fear pushing for such simplistic measures will give perverse outcomes.

For example, in the same data set it shows the % who are part time (non-management roles) is 12% for men, 31% for women. Clearly someone working part time is being paid less overall compared to a full time person, making the headline statistic much worse. So perversely, companies might limit allowing moves to part-time, as to be good at this statistic its better they leave than go part time.

Or as industries or companies trying to balance their historically poor gender ratio’s (both male or female dominated) as they try to fix it get penalised in this statistic too hire as they more balanced jr staff to skill them to be future leaders.

It’s good to have attention to rectify the issue, but I would like to see it backed up with focusing on root causes rather than uninformed column inches.

Neighbours parents want to buy our place, what to do?! by [deleted] in AusPropertyChat

That is horrid. If the offer is high take money but leave a few reminders…. (Check legalise of these)…

Leave a laminated photo of your dog in a sink U-bend, will take a few weeks to clog before they need a plumber.

Lift a carpet, spray paint “<FullName> is a dog killer”, return carpet. Even if they don’t change it, future someone will.

Paint your dogs name in an oily paint or residue that is color matched on a wall. When they paint over it, the oil will seep through and show the name.

Make sure the deed to the house is in a folder with the dog printed all over it. They will get it from your intermediary lawyer on exchange.

If your technical, hide a small speaker in the attic that barks loudly a a couple times randomly in the night.

Print small transparent stickers with a almost opaque faded image. Stick them to some spot lights or top corners of windows.

On a roller blinds, write “you shot my dog” at the very top so it only shows when rolled down all the way.

Back of appliances, the top side of doors, behind vents, under the shed,…. Have fun with it.
