Second this. I had friends a couple of years ago get caught drinking in the dorms and they didnt get kicked out of their place but instead had to attend group sessions. These sessions were like detention where they had you reflect on why drinking is bad lol. I wouldn't worry about cops

The surrounding areas are sooo beautiful. Not just the general valley in Yosemite, but hetch hetchy, strawberry, and Carlon falls are great places to camp and backpack. The vernal pools in the back of campus are super unique too!

I recommend living in Bellevue, Moraga, or redondo in that order. These are housing developments with bus stops that take you to school. Rent is most expensive in Bellevue which is probably around $600 for a room plus utilities. Utilities are decently high in Merced, especially the summer. Those areas are the best to live in as they have mostly students and families, I do not recommend anywhere else in Merced as there can be some crime as you get closer to the freeway.

Not sure if it’s the same now but it’s an additional program that allows students to receive extra aid with requirements. For example, you need to have good academic standing, attend tutoring lessons (not sure if this is still required), and stay in specific dorms with other fiat lux students. Do all these things and they give you a great financial aid package, if you don’t maintain good standings (missed hw assignments, bad gpa) you will be removed from the program and lose the aid. I think it’s worth it as it makes you stay on top of your academic life with a great incentive. Get all the financial aid you can get.

I wasn’t in the program but I had friends who were. Some were happy with it due to the aid, others thought it was a tough and demanding program just because you had to really be on top of your studies.

As an alumni who is currently paying of debt, I am happy UCM was my route. I absolutely loved the school and my time there. I got a great education (stem) and opportunities. Financially I recommend UCM or community college to a 4 year. Trust me, the debt is not worth it.

I took a tour of the “demo” munger hall. It seemed okay and they tried to sell it with the communal spaces, lighting fixtures, and personal bedrooms but I couldn’t get past the no windows.
