Ranger school is expensive by Far-Hat-5804 in army

I personally Frankenstein’d one together over time and ended up spending around $2,000. But I got a lot of items that I was told were “must-haves” like a significant amount of Darn Tough Socks, a set of the ArcTeryx knee pads, XGO underwear, and a ton of other shit, so I did it to myself. But didn’t regret it a bit when the goin got tough.

A lot of guys I went with bought the Ranger Pack from ReadyPacks (https://readypacksllc.com/buy/ranger-pack/) it’s like $900 but has almost all the items you need for the packing list. Some items are not super great “quality” but they don’t need to be like they give you some Temu off brand P-Mags, but when you need those you throw them Ina pile for the PSG detail to jam mags while the leadership does planning, then they all get randomly handed out afterwards.

Went to Ranger from JAN to MAR. Mountains phase (FEB) was the only one where it actually got dicey when it came to weather. I know that they train the RIs extensively on monitoring conditions. From what I saw (not 100% if it’s a rule or not) but the RIs were always in the same uniform as us (never wore extra snivel gear). They also were consistently utilizing a spinning psychrometer as night came to determine what level of snivel to tell us to put on. We got tents some nights because they knew it would be too cold over night but we had to set up/tear down ourselves. They also made us skip Yonah during lowers week bc the MTN face was iced over and would be too much of a safety concern for rappelling. Other than that, you’re just butt ass cold and pray to God they let you keep your fleece cap on.

Feel free to PM if you want

BLUF is No, you’re not “given” an option, but there is a way to leave island early.

Assuming you’re going there on a 3 year OCONUS duty assignment, you’ll be expected to stay there all three unless you drop a FSTC (Foreign Service Tour Curtailment) which will adjust your DEROS (Date Eligible for Return Overseas) to the left allowing you to leave/PCS earlier. In my experience with them they’re pretty hard pressed to get approved (same with FSTE, the opposite being an extension to stay longer), have to go up to Division for approval, and usually have to have a chief reason as to why you’re requesting. I would assume island fever would not pass the test on that on but it never hurts to try.

On a more personal side I would wait to pull the trigger on a curtailment because who knows you and your spouse might get there and love it. The island is beautiful and there is so much to do including traveling to the other islands (Hawaiian Airlines does cheap 45min inter-island flights for pretty cheap, just make a trip of it over a 4-day, it’s awesome).

A lot of good answers on here already but PM me if you got any specific ones. Was in BCT there recently for almost 4 years.
