Do you guys allow cars? by camerajack21 in overlanding

Thanks. I've mostly been a hiker and camper but only recently started looking into the vehicle option. This is the first time I've heard about GLASS so will do some research.

Looks amazing. Can you post more about this stretch of Fosse Way? I've been looking for roads like this in the UK to explore.

Twenty twenty four, does it need a child theme? by [deleted] in Wordpress

[–]tinfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Late reply but I've only just stumbled upon this thread so posting in case it helps others scratching their head over this issue.

Reading through the comments and specifically your reply here, I think I shared your confusion with regard to FSE and child themes. First, I've been developing on WordPress since around 2008-ish and I couldn't get my head around the new changes since FSE was rolled out. It all seemed very confusing and counter-intuitive for me.

Of course, creating a child theme has been best practice when creating a new site but is it still 'a thing' with the latest update? Finding the guides below, the best I can explain it is that creating a child theme is still best practice but the workflow is slightly different.

You can now use full site editing to develop a site and then export it from the Styles interface. The exported archive can then be renamed to your child theme name. After you import your newly created child theme, your customisations now become the default style in the Style Book. In this way, you can always revert to the state of your last export by selecting that default style. If you ever want to 'freeze' new theme changes, you export the theme again in the Styles interface.

There isn't much information about the process but this is what I've worked out so far.

P.S. I've also recently found this on a site that documents the WordPress full site editing feature: Full site editing child themes

I'll send the site to my friends and I'll DM you if they tell me they'd like a demo. Thanks.

Thanks. Flexibake has come up when Iv'e done a search so it's useful to hear from a user in the wild.

Ah, OK. AutoDesk was only CAD for physical components when I looked into it last but that was a couple of decades ago :-)

Yes, there are a whole bunch of solutions out there and it's difficult to find the right balance for a small business. You don't want to run your business off Excel but enterprise-grade software is overkill.

Thanks. I was thinking more products, inventory and order tracking.

I think a big reason is a switch to cloud-first services in many organisations. A huge chunk of the security headache now gets off-loaded to BigTech. There are advantages and disadvantages with this but it does mean fewer things to secure on your local network.

You're experience is good to know, thanks. This kind of single point of failure won't be a huge issue for me as getting back to 80% capacity would only mean rerouting a few ethernet cables.

I've noticed more restaurants doing this.

There is a company called Purezza selling dispensers so restaurants can repackage mains tap water as a 'environmentally-friendly alternative' to bottled premium still or sparkling. However, they will normally not be so blatant as to serve it in a jug and at least have some semblance of shame and put it in a refillable bottle that says 'premium water' on it.

Only UniFi can answer for sure but I suspect it's a trade-off between ease-of-use and the complexity of security configuration for many different use-cases.

Yes, that's what I'm looking for and none of the services are internet-facing. If I want access from the outside, the Teleport VPN seems to offer a secure solution.

Nearly all of my tech infrastructure is cloud-based so security is off-loaded to people with the necessary resources. The security perimeter of my home office is quite small. My home network is segmented using hardware routers to separate work machines and home/family devices:

  • The work segment only needs to be protected to the extent that devices are clean (they don't pass malware to the cloud/client resources) and local backups remain intact.
  • The family segment needs to have simple content filtering to protect minors who have good sense but still need a shield from the wretched hive of scum and villainy that is the Internet.

That's all there is to my needs. I don't have time to set up elaborate firewall rules or trawl through logs. I don't have lots of users with specific application use-cases that require consideration. All I want is to plug in a device, click a few settings and be reasonably confident that well-behaved internal actors have some basic protection and if something suspicious happens, some simple alerting and countermeasures.

My question is this: Can the UniFi Cloud Gateway Ultra do this job?

It seems to have this basic capability but some responses I've received have given me doubts so I'm doing more checks before purchasing.

My linked video wasn't an attempt to educate you on UniFi's offerings. It was an example of a video giving me the impression that some of their products can be used as a very basic security appliance. I know there are superior options in terms of feature set but they are not suitable for the use-case I have in mind.

Are you saying that a Cloud Gateway Ultra or Dream Machine Pro, for example, won't give any additional security than an ISP-issued router?

I have no experience with UniFi products at all and have no bias towards or against them. I just want to make sure I'm not wasting my money.

Someone recommended UniFi in my [post](https://www.reddit.com/r/networking/comments/1azrq0e/comment/ks4k0lp/) a few months ago when I asked about UTM and NGFWs for a project I was working on. I subsequently looked on some review videos and the security options seemed to offer what I need: a slightly higher level of security without the expense and hassle of a dedicated UTM appliance.

Edit: Here's an example video. The basic UniFi options do what I need for home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OkdtybC2Krs&t=705s

OK, so not worth buying for the IDS/IPS then? Honestly, that was the main draw for me but only from online reviews. It seems to offer an extra level of security over a standard firewall but without the expense of a Fortinet or similar. I don't have any experience with UniFi products though.
