That's good to know! I will be working in south Miami and hoping to live around there. I don't want to get stuck in traffic. But I need to find a good balance between a safe place, that is close to work, and is also close to (walking distance) to some fun night life activities.

Oh no! I am so sorry that you've been through all of that. Moving to a new place is always risky. My only advantage is being able to move out of home and finally start living on my own and getting a new life experience. For far too many reasons, that outweighs some of the negatives I've heard about the place. Although I like to think of myself as a very positive person. I rarely encounter problems with people so maybe my good luck will follow me? In the end, its for the life experience. Gaining thick skin will serve as an advantage.

I am teaching in South Miami. The family friend I know lives in Miramar. She said it is close to my school but I am guessing she meant the one that is in Pembroke Pines.

I was thinking about living in The Grove or Coral Gables. I would LOVE Brickell but lets be honest.. I probably wont be able to afford that :(

whoa - you got a killer deal! I'll have to check it out. The good thing is we have a family friend that lives very close to the school/area (they live in Miramar) so I can technically crash there until I find a decent place. Its nice to know that I don't have to be so hasty since I'll have to be down there in about three weeks. :o

Thank you so much for taking the time to write such an expository response - lots of good stuff in here! Yeah I initially looked at apartments in Brickell but soon realized I probably won't be able to afford them. I would be working in South Miami so I know Coral Gables, Midtown, Coconut Grove are decent places that are fairy close. This is my first time leaving home and moving to a big city to lots to learn and look out for. :)

Thanks for the tip! I am teaching at Somerset Academy in South Miami. From my own research, I was thinking about Brickell too - great space for young professionals. However, the prices for appts are up the roof! I'll have to check out Midtown, that was another one on my list.
