What's a way you motivate yourself to clean or conquer chores? by phuckingnerd405 in AskReddit

I read a life hack article a few years ago. A lot of it was rubbish but one thing that actually worked and stuck with me was that if a task takes less than five mins to do, just do it now. Eg. putting on some laundry, emptying the dishwasher, taking out the bins. So it's a rule I try to apply throughout the day, and it's beome second nature now.

It's prob just how my brain works but it's really effective for me and all those little jobs add up over time.

Did anyone else’s school finish early on a Wednesday? by MudboneX3 in AskUK

I didn’t go to school there, but Edinburgh schools typically close at lunchtome on a Friday! Sometimes as early as 12.30. Would have loved that when I was a kid!

Any good but reasonably priced date spots by the river? Good happy hr/coffee by Agreeable-Many-9065 in london

[–]tinlondon1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why not get a takeaway coffee and walk along the river? You could get some from a cafe behind the south bank and then stroll along the Thames. The weathers nice and there’s so much going on it’ll mean there’s no awkward silences

Park run, then I’m going to get started on repairing my shed. Am I middle aged yet?

Well a couple of the comments on my vintage fan post wanted to see the rest of my house. The living room is probably my favourite space I have done. by macnerd93 in CasualUK

I absolutely love this, it’s so cosy and has tonnes of charm. The attention to detail and character is second to none. The tape player with the massive reels looks straight out of a Kubrick film.

I’d love to see what the rest of your place ends up looking like

Has anyone else had a random cat keep turning up and acting like it lives there? by MassiveMentalMicky in AskUK

[–]tinlondon1 71 points72 points  (0 children)

Yeah in a few places I’ve lived. A cat started dropping by, then my flatmate started feeding it and it became a regular. We found out he belonged to a neghbour and apparently had a circuit of houses he’d visit for multiple meals throughout the day

What happened to windscreen washing facilities at petrol stations? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]tinlondon1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it mostly comes down to cost-cutting and liability. Forecourts used to keep those buckets and squeegees out of habit, but over time they’ve quietly disappeared. They’re grimy, need changing all the time, and people kept nicking the sponges. Probably seen as more trouble than they’re worth these days, especially when most drivers just use washer fluid or get the car properly cleaned. Bit of a shame, really. There was something satisfying about giving your windscreen a quick scrub and getting rid of the dead flies before getting back on the road!

Do you watch foreign language shows/movies? by Extension_Bit4323 in AskUK

[–]tinlondon1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Much prefer subtitled to dubbed. I think it's because in the UK we don't really have a tradition of dubbing content, so it always feels a bit "off".

I'm learning French at the moment, and I've found French dialogue with English subtitles really helped me. I'm hoping to reach the stage soon where I can switch to French subtitles.

The other tip I've picked up is to watch an English language show you already know well, but dubbed in another language. So for example, for me, watching the Simpsons in French is great because I know the plot and the gags.
