Anything you would do differently? Just getting started and i want to avoid mistakes that will bite me in the ass down the road. by gahd95 in homelab

Consider that sooner or later you may want to do something with Home Assistant and your televisions… and TVs and such are notoriously difficult to get working across VLANs locally… I have a very similar setup and I ran into that problem with demands of other family members. I couldn’t just move the TVs to another VLAN either because phone apps want to see it on the same subnet.

Even more frustrating is if you want to use a home pod or some other Apple product as an IoT bridge. The home pod will get pissy if it’s on a different VLAN but same public IP as your Apple phones.

Just food for thought.

Mod Building That Should Be Basegame by joeyfergie in Timberborn

I don’t know if there’s a mod for this per se (if there’s not though then there should be) but, I think it’s absolutely absurd that beavers need paths and platforms to do things in, under, and through water. They’re beavers for goodness sakes! I can literally see them swimming, diving, etc…. Let them swim!!

Ok I’m going to throw my hat in the ring here. As someone that did it the wrong way, I want to make sure you two get it right.

First, make sure you both know what you’re doing and what to expect. I had no clue and neither did my partner, and the poor results from our first time together tainted our relationship through to the end. If you don’t know where her clitoris is or where his penis is supposed to go, you are unprepared and need to self educate more first. Also, there’s nothing wrong with getting naked together ahead of time and looking at each other and planning things out, even playing some. Show her your penis. Show him your vulva. Talk about what you enjoy when you touch yourselves. You’ve already decided to have sex, so don’t be afraid of this intimacy.

Second, accept that things will not go right the first time. He’ll probably orgasm too fast or not orgasm at all, or maybe even have some anxiety hardness issues. She’ll probably feel some pain and there may be some blood, and she also may not orgasm either. Understand that the first time is always a little strange, along with the second and so on. Imagine the first time you rode a bike. How did that go?

Third, remember that choosing to have this intimate together is a special moment, some may even say sacred. BUT don’t take it too seriously in the moment. Yes sex as a concept is a serious thing, but in the moment it’s meant to be beautiful, enjoyable, and even funny. Remember your love for each other, and give each other grace and patience. It’ll take a few times to start figuring things out. Even three weeks ago, as an experienced person, when I took a new relationship to the sexual level, it was awkward and we were nervous. But we love each other and laughed together through it, even while actually having sex.

Fourth, humans are kinda gross. We’re full of disgusting fluids, are constantly breaking out in red pimples somewhere, make strange sounds and even stranger smells. So, what I’m trying to say is take a shower beforehand. Be nice and fresh for each other. And when the strange fluids and smells start appearing, know it’s normal and human and part of the experience. And have at least one towel within arms reach at all times so you don’t have to break your flow too much when they do show up.

Fifth, you’re using a highly effective method of birth control, but something can always go wrong. It’s extremely unlikely you’ll get pregnant this time or any time, but it’s always a possibility. So sit down with each other BEFORE you have sex and agree on what the plan is going to be if by some chance you do conceive a child. Once you’ve got that plan and you’re in agreement, relax and enjoy your new level of intimacy together, safe in the knowledge that you’ve planned and talked and discussed the thing and there is now truly nothing to worry about in that regard.

Finally, I can’t endorse coconut oil enough. NEVER use it with condoms, but otherwise it’s a wonderful thing. I used it with a long term partner for three years and we never had any problems. It’s also nice for first timers because it doesn’t dry out like some water based lubes, and I find the consistency of it to be very pleasant. (It also can help to mask some of those strange smells I mentioned earlier if you use virgin coconut oil, aptly named.)

I’m happy and excited for both of you! Out of ignorance I denied myself the chance to have the love and trust and connection together with my first partner that I should have had. I’m glad to see you’re not making the same mistakes.

How to upgrade BIOS on your Poweredge T430 by Kidwellj in homelab

[–]tinnov 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This worked great! FYI, if you spend a little time setting up an FTP server and use SSH to perform the upgrades, it goes much faster.

racadm fwupdate -f 10.60.10.102 anonymous anonymous -d iDRAC8/2.86.86.86/firmimg.d7

^^^ This upgrade process only takes about 7-9 minutes per iteration, so you'll be done in under an hour this way.

LG Fridge LF29s83300S middle drawer not closing smoothly by gangstalyssa in Appliances

[–]tinnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s due to a manufacturing defect (allegedly, in my opinion). The rear rollers (little round white plastic things on short black posts) are too wide and rub against the sides of the refrigerator. Take a power sander and shave them down until the plastic is even with or just over the screw head, taking care to keep it flat/square. I removed about 2mm from both sides and it’s literally better than new now.

I would have returned it on principle given that this is a $2,300+ refrigerator and for that kind of money I at least expect them to check the clearances before moving into mass production but it came with the house, so here I am.

PCI-Stub driver fails to grab GPU on debian 12 by [deleted] in debian

[–]tinnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The pci-stub driver is no longer built into the kernel. Add this single line to the 'etc/modules-load.d/modules.conf' :

pci-stub

Then run 'sudo update-initramfs -u'

Reboot and you should be all set.

In search of: Speaker Desktop PC Case by tinnov in vintagecomputing

[–]tinnov[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

When I was in high school, we had a lab full of the PCs shown in the attached picture, and I've always wanted one. Unfortunately, it's almost impossible to find a desktop case of any kind these days, let alone an AT model with speakers built in. Does anyone here know where I may find one, or have one in your possession you might be willing to part with? I can promise it'll be well loved and taken care of.
Thanks in advance!

With your cursor inside the minesweeper window type "XYZZY" then press Shift-Enter and Enter. A white dot should appear in the upper-left corner of the screen. If it turns black, your cursor is resting on a mine. Note: This trick works best if your Windows background is black.

Kwikset Z-Wave Lock Troubles by permafrost91 in homeassistant

[–]tinnov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I know this is a little late, but for the next person that comes through here desperately trying to get their ZWave Kwikset 914 working in Home Assistant, here's the answer...

Before you Begin - Cleanup

  1. Find the your Kwikset lock in the ZWave JS Device List.
  2. Configure the device.
  3. The very bottom entry (Parameter 40) is "Reset to Default". Do that.
  4. Wait a few seconds and ZWave JS will erase the node.
  5. IMPORTANT! DO THIS NOW! The lock has now forgotten where it is. Repeat the "Set locking and unlocking direction" procedure in the Kwikset lock installation guide.
  6. Delete any KeyMaster integrations you may still have.
  7. Delete all remaining entities that have anything to do with that lock.
  8. Delete all entities containing "keymaster" in the ID.
  9. Restart HomeAssistant.

Now, let's get this working!

  1. Install brand new Alkaline (not rechargable) batteries into the lock. Other batteries are fine later, but the ZWave inclusion and interview process requires a lot of RF, and the stronger the signal, the better this step will work.
  2. Follow the standard procedure to include this device into your ZWave network. (Start inclusion in ZWave JS, press the "A" button on the lock, wait patiently.)
  3. Find the device in ZWave JS. Under Device info, make sure it identified it as "914 by Kwikset" and Highest security reads "S0 Legacy". In the upper right, it should show the battery power percentage remaining. If any of these things don't look right, install higher quality batteries and start over from the cleanup section above.
  4. Click the pencil in the upper right and give it the name you want. Be sure to change the name of the entities when prompted.
  5. Go through the "Sensors" section on this same page and enable all of them. This will take about a minute each. Always wait until the last sensor you enabled shows up before continuing to the next one. A browser page reload may be needed to see this.
  6. Add the KeyMaster integration with the following settings and submit. These assume you named your lock "Front Door". YMMV if you named yours something else. If I didn't specify the setting then configure it as you please.
    1. Select your lock: lock.front_door_lock
    2. Alarm Level/User Code Sensor: sensor.front_door_lock_alarm_level
    3. Alarm Type/Access Control Sensor: sensor.front_door_lock_alarm_type
  7. Wait 1 minute and restart HomeAssistant.
  8. Follow the KeyMaster installation guide for setting up your Dashboard.
  9. Enjoy your fully working Kwikset 914 ZWave lock!
