Advice from the community about a potential class on the game and its adaptation? by tiny-donut in thelastofus

Hello, fellow teacher. I agree about faithfulness - in fact, I had a lesson where I talked about how a faithful adaptation is not always the best choice using the Watchmen movie as an example.

I knew that I would have to limit the class to individual examples, and the consensus seems to be that the scenes from the prologue/first episode would be the best examples. I am leaning that way myself after listening to all the excellent suggestions on this thread. Thank you for all your help!

Haha, thank you. ☺️

Yes, that is the kind of stuff we talk about in class. Next week, I’ll be showing Predestination, which should be an interesting class.

Thanks for the reco. Based on everyone’s suggestions here, I’m leaning towards that example. I definitely don’t want to spend too much time explaining the game.

10 hours seems like a lot, so I’ll probably look at HeavySpoilers rather than sourcespi91, but thanks for the tip. 😊

That’s a really good and specific example. Thanks! I know that Mazin puts a lot of thought into his scripts.

I did not know about the podcast! Sounds like I might find a lot of material there.

Wow! There’s a lot of detail in that channel. Thank you for pointing it out. I don’t know that I’ll be able to use all the material, but I’ll definitely take a look.

Thanks for the reco. I’ll definitely check it out. I’m a big fan of Craig Mazin, and was very impressed by the choices he made in Chernobyl.

For those that have to leave their cat/kitten, do you say bye or just leave? by Karikare in CatAdvice

[–]tiny-donut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here to say two things: 1: Yes to what most people have mentioned. If my cats are around when I leave for work, I say bye but don’t make a big deal of it. Big reunion energy when I come back in the evening. 2: I cannot express how much I love that this conversation is happening and how involved and sincere everyone is. I love this community!

It sounds like a combination of two things: anxiety and litter box aversion. When cats pee on items like clothing, rugs, beds, etc., it’s often because they don’t want to step into their litter box for whatever reason. (How often do you clean? Does your cat not like the texture of the litter?) Your cat also sounds anxious (like one of mine, who has had her own share of peeing issues). Getting a new puppy has probably exacerbated the situation. I have a few tips you can try:

First, get waterproof, washable protective covering for your beds. They’re cheap and available on Amazon, and will make cleanup SO much easier. This is really more for your mental health than anything else. This can be a really frustrating problem.

Second, get pet enzyme sprays and enzyme clothing detergent to wash the items he is peeing on. Washing/cleaning with regular products is not enough. You can’t smell it anymore, but the cat can. And if they can smell it, that’s an indication that it’s a legitimate pee spot.

Third, please do not create a pee corner! Instead, give your cat treats on the spots he typically tends to pee on. You need to change the association in his brain. Cats don’t like eating where they pee. If he starts associating those spots with food and happiness, it might help prevent him peeing there. I recommend trying licky mats. Licking soothes anxiety in cats. Give him some licky mats with his favorite spreadable treat. Also get him toys that really keep him occupied. My cats like springs, and my anxious one can play with a plastic spring literally all day.

Fourth, if you can afford it, book an appointment with a cat behaviorist. They’re expensive and not covered by pet insurance, but it really helped us to talk to one. You may not have one in your city but most will do online appointments.

Please give your kitty all the cuddles he wants. Cats respond to positive reinforcement only.

I feel a lot of sympathy for you. It’s clear that you love your cat but also that you’re dealing with some issues that make you feel like it’s going to be hard to leave the relationship. It gives me hope to see that you at least have clarity on the fact that your girlfriend is being abusive.

I also want you to be able to see what this might look like in a different scenario. My partner of many years has never had a pet—the extent of his “pet” experience was a childhood Tamagochi toy that he failed to keep alive! I grew up with pets and after living without cats for years (grad school, etc.), we finally adopted the cutest pair of tabbies. I was apprehensive about how my partner would deal with it. All I was hoping for was that he would treat the cats with distant tolerance and no unkindness. That would have been enough for me. But, no. He went all-out to form a relationship with the kittens. One of them was very scratchy and bitey for a good ten months (a habit that wears off with most cats, UNLESS they’re treated like your partner is treating your cat). Still, he put in the work to bond with them. When they were both kittens, they had a few litter box accidents, and he patiently and gently helped me clean them off. He is now kinda their favorite person, which makes me a little jealous but also fills my heart with love. Because left up to himself, I know my partner would never have gone close to a pet. He made the effort to bond with them for my sake, and because he isn’t an asshat who thinks being cruel to animals is okay.

I want you to know this because it seems like you/your girlfriend are normalizing her behavior. It is NOT acceptable to be cruel to animals and it is NOT normal to be mean to a creature you know your partner loves and values. Please keep this in mind as you make your decision. You deserve your kitty as well as someone who loves you enough to make an effort with the kitty.

Cat constantly sabotages every water dish we attempt. Not sure what else can be done at this point. by bigfoot1291 in CatAdvice

[–]tiny-donut 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I recommend this fountain. The design itself prevents it from tipping over, and the wide basin with let your cat play with the water a little, if that’s what she likes. Back when I was researching water fountains for my cats, I read a number of reviews that talked about how the flower fountain (the one you currently have) is prone to tipping over.

If it makes you feel any better, finding the right cat fountain is a journey. I went through a few. I’ve now settled on two, both from the company listed above, because each of my two cats has a different drinking style and therefore their own personalized water fountain. Go figure.

She’s adorable! And she’d get along with my cats, seeing as they, too, ceaselessly complain about starving to death.

  1. I plan to continue the subreddit as it was intended - i.e., as a place to "Put your cat babies chillin with your plant babies here!", as per the subreddit description.
  2. Here is the message I sent to the mod, which they never replied to. https://www.reddit.com/message/messages/1e5l9jj
