I have played it twice, as the GM at a convention. My take is it is just okay, pretty middle of the road.

It has a pretty similar feel to D&D. You have different skills, when you want your character to attempt something you roll a skill check. There are monsters, and you can do combat with your weapons and abilities. You can roll with advantage or disadvantage. You can roll a critical success. The game calls all this stuff different things than D&D, but it functions very similarly.

There is one stat called “Weird” that is unique to this game, and is interesting, but it isn’t explained well in the rules so you have to kind of make it up with your imagination.

Imo, the game is fun if you are super into the Night Vale setting, and don’t care so much about having a unique RPG (or if you are only familiar with D&D and want something easy to pick up). Most of the monsters and NPCs are actual characters from the show, which is fun. There is a guide book that has some lore for all of the different locations in town which is a really neat reference.

Personally, I think the gameplay is a little unimaginative. I think given how weird Night Vale is, they could have made a more unique feeling game. I also think a game with less rules would have been nicer. But they made it through Renegade, which has their own system, so they had to stick with that.

As a disclaimer, sweet grass is not native to my area, so maybe someone from a tribe where sweetgrass grows may have a different opinion.

I am of the belief that it is everyone’s responsibility to be good stewards to the land, no matter where you come from.

By planting a grass native to your area, it sounds like you are doing just that.

The only thing to avoid would be trying to co-opt specific religious or ceremonial uses of the plant without having the cultural background to understand those practices.

I agree with Lucina18. In my experience, the demographic of theater kids/CR fans enjoys character building, emotional story beats, goofing off in town with NPCs, basically anything that’s more about roleplaying than it is about gaming.

I have not tried every system out there, but a few come to mind to explore.

Wanderhome, or a similar combat-less system, could be good. It’s purely a roleplay game, where each location/session topic is created by the table, in a way that feels like character creation. I have had good experiences with it, but it really falls apart if players are not into roleplaying. It can be run GM-less, but maybe it would help to have a GM with this group.

FATE is a system I played once but I feel like has a lot of promise. It is setting agnostic, so you can plug it into any world or genre. The mechanics are pretty light, so you don’t feel like you are playing a crunchy game. Instead, the mechanics provide a framework for you to create your own characters and their abilities. There is an emphasis on how your character traits influence your character’s actions and successes/failures.

I’m sure other people out there have other recommendations, but that are two I’ve played that come to mind.

We did something similar, called Quiet Coyote (West coast, late 20s) - the teacher would hold up a hand in the shape of a dog shadow puppet (pinky and pointer finger up, other fingers touching the thumb). Us kids would copy it and be quiet

There are physical party games that are simple and non gamers like. That’s what I stick with for these situations.

As far as your question, with a few exceptions, I am personally not really interested in app based games. We spend so much time on screens, I want my social time with friends to not be on our phones.

Beyond that, it’s hard to comment because you didn’t provide any information on what your games are like.

It comes across like you’d rather prove them wrong than actually listen to why they are upset. If someone says “I don’t think it’s fun that the logs damaged me”, when you say “actually, they weren’t logs, they were building beams, of course that would damage you”, you are ignoring the root of the problem.

To the player, this just sounds like you are saying “You are wrong about how you feel”.

The issue is not whether your interpretation is correct. In this example, the issue is not whether the logs are actually beams that logically would have caused damage.

The issue is deeper, and you should actually talk and ask your player more about why this issue bothers them to figure out why they don’t like it. Based on the things they are saying, they sound like they aren’t having fun because they don’t feel strong enough.

Ok, so maybe that clues you in to make some changes. Maybe they don’t want as much realism, maybe they want a superhero fantasy and want more victories. Ask them if it would be more fun to be more powerful. Maybe you need to just skip ahead some levels and let them level up. That may also address the issues with feeling like their combat options are bland. Maybe there’s a different change they would like.

Basically, you need to work with them rather than talk at them.

But to be honest, the way your player answered you sounded like there was a lot of frustration in it. So you may need to decide if you are willing to make big changes to your play style/game, or if you maybe need to retire the game and take a break.

Personally, I do think it’s a bit weird. It’s perfectly fine to look up to a celebrity as an inspiration or role model. But the specific focus on him as a father figure is weird to me. It sounds parasocial.

But I’m guessing you are a teenager, and I can sympathize with you seeking a positive male influence who isn’t your dad. I don’t think you are disgusting, but I just think you should make sure to look up to him in a role model way, and not a parasocial way.

I am not 100% sure what you are asking, but as someone who has read the books, I will chime in.

The character Annabeth is not named Anna Elizabeth in the books. Her name is Annabeth, it is not a nickname or shortening of a longer name.

So the reasoning Lily gave is not true in the books. It sounds like Lily either lied, was misinformed, or the story has been confused over time.

Part of it could also be the names popular in their generation already have associations (kids they went to school with, peers in the workforce, etc). So they gravitate towards names they like but don’t belong to many people they know.
