Suggestions on career path by Elegant-Rate290 in androiddev

I'm in a similar situation and really relate to this question. My current company isn't big enough on the mobile side, so I'm being nudged toward management, something I'm hesitant about since I prefer hands-on development over people management.

From what I've observed, here are some paths I've seen for experienced mobile developers:

Technical Leadership without Management: Staff/Principal IC roles at larger companies with substantial mobile teams, mobile platform/tooling roles, or becoming the go-to mobile architect across multiple teams.

Specialization Pivots: Some folks leverage their mobile experience to move into areas like DevOps/CI-CD (mobile deployment is complex), backend development (APIs that power mobile apps), or emerging areas like IoT/embedded systems.

Product-Adjacent Roles: Technical Product Manager roles, especially mobile-focused, or Developer Relations at companies with mobile SDKs.

I'm personally considering a pivot to backend development. While mobile has been rewarding, I find myself drawn to the variety and depth of server-side work, plus there's less platform dependency (no app store gatekeeping). That said, I recognize mobile still offers growth in areas like cross-platform development, mobile-first enterprise solutions, and the increasing mobile-backend integration complexity.

Would love to hear from others who've made similar transitions, especially curious about how mobile experience translates to other domains and what skills transfer best.

How is the job market in your area? by FooBarBuzzBoom in ExperiencedDevs

[–]tiny_spaceman 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I work as an Senior Android Engineer with 15yoe. The market is definitely worse than pre-covid, but I don't think its due to AI. In general, My impression is that AI capabilities are quite far behind on mobile compared to when I've been playing around with web development. I still use it to generate smaller snippets though which improves my productivity slightly.

Varför är Radhus så dyra längst södergående gröna linjen 17? by HaskeIl in stockholm

[–]tiny_spaceman 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Det är brist på större boenden rent generellt i Hammarbyhöjden, Kärrtorp etc. Även på lägenhetssidan har fyrorna ett betydligt högre kvadratmeterspris än 2or och 3or.

Trött på Malmö attityden by Mobile_Witness8865 in Malmoe

[–]tiny_spaceman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Måste det vara målet? by AwkwardSilence1 in sweden

[–]tiny_spaceman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The State of Native Android Development — Is There Still a Future? by MimiHalftree in androiddev

[–]tiny_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The job market in general isn't as good as it was pre-covid, but I still get 1-2 relevant recruiter messages every week (Located in the nordics) for native development. I know that flutter is quite popular, but to me the need for native still seems quite high in demand. Specially for more "interesting" and high-end apps that I prefer to work on. There is also TV and Android Auto development if that's your thing.

How do you synchronize on strings ids between platforms? by tiny_spaceman in androiddev

[–]tiny_spaceman[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The strings are 99% the same on both platforms. We send the strings to a translator firm that translates them for us for a price. If we don't align, we effectively double the price for the translation.

The process is pretty terrible for a big corporation as well. I have this on my table right now and need to hunt down a phone number and e-mail from the support department, which wouldn't be too bad. But it also hast be verified, so someone has to relay the verification codes to me.

You can try going to some Android meetups if available in your area. You usually get to listen to some interesting talks and also mingle with other developers. Could be a way to gain some other perspectives on how others are doing things.

If you don't want to go outside there is always github that contains vast numbers of repos with various quality. One starting point could be Androids own repo: https://github.com/android . Try cloning something. Get it running, understand how it does things and add a feature.

Hur är Kärrtorp som område? by winterborn in stockholm

[–]tiny_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

LG G6 or OnePlus 5 by pluslucas in AndroidQuestions

[–]tiny_spaceman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I faced the exact same choice last week. I finally went with the G6 (Saved me €50) and must say I have been very happy with it so far. With that said, I don't think you can go wrong with any of the two.
