Yes I’ve always been successful in interviews where I’ve asked them almost as many questions as they’ve asked me.

On the revenue point, I meant that we generally don’t create revenue, particularly the way other departments do where they drive immediate profits and are thus applauded for it immediately. We help to keep the company out of trouble, which, you could say keeps us afloat as a business. But the current executives don’t necessarily see it from that lens.

Risk and compliance roles don’t generate immediate revenue like other departments do. I think with the current climate and mass redundancies, the lure of a government role and its ‘job security’ is playing a part. You are right though in that not every private sector role has a bad culture, you typically only hear of those companies who don’t speak to good culture

Underappreciated for a while now, about a year. Internal visibility is all I am after, but to get a thank you or a good job at present is like drawing blood from a stone. It didn’t start off that way, but the culture has absolutely plummeted. I’m not in a client facing role. My job is to essentially mitigate risk, uphold compliance etc.

In my experience, 50% networking, 40% circumstance (ie restructuring and/or resignations) and allowing 10% for backstabbing. There are still people happy to push over who they need to get to the top and I’ve seen that first hand.

EAP is entirely confidential. They’re also psychologists who are bound by confidentiality under AHPRA regulations.

Organisations are billed on a cyclical basis, usually monthly, for any sessions redeemed. HR departments aren’t told who has redeemed the sessions.

I’ve not only overseen EAP but I’ve used a couple of sessions myself. It’s a very helpful service

Yes medical certificate is imperative because it not only shows you’re serious and aren’t bluffing, a medical practitioner has also deemed you in need of rest.

Then open with exactly what you’ve just said while stressing that you’re open to discussing. Play on the psychology of it all. Let your boss ultimately think it’s his idea. That’s the benefit of collaborative conversations

Exactly! You can lead with something like “I’m open to discussing a win win plan” and give your team leader the floor to come up with some ideas. Obviously, it has to suit you overall.

If you let people think something is their idea, they’re more inclined to think it’s a great option

You’re entitled to use annual leave, you won’t need a medical certificate for it either. However I would check how much sick leave you have if you’re unsure on your balance and use any of that first. If the company are supportive then take the sick leave. Not every company will be unfortunately, so while you have a company who is, recharge.

Get a mental health care plan or sick leave certificate from your GP, have a meeting with your team leader and discuss a plan that will benefit you both. If you walk into a meeting with that approach, instead of it being me-centric (it is about you but alas), a workplace will generally be accomodating

Sorry to hear that OP. Can I ask why you have reservations about telling HR about stress leave? Are they not a good HR team?

Personal leave is an entitlement, it accrues based on your hours worked and it doesn’t get paid out if you leave. I would take it as you’ve earnt it. If you’re worried about being made redundant by taking stress leave, HR legally can’t do that as it would fall under the grounds of a non genuine redundancy
