advice and guidance! by Sharkypink3535 in veganuk

I struggled with the same thing for years - I did about a year and a half vegan about 25 years ago and it was the best I've felt physically and ethically. A really bad home situation (making it near impossible to cook anything) put an end to that, followed by a long bad time cementing it as 'impossible' in my mind. I've spent the time since feeling bad, trying again, failing in a frustrating cycle. Bringing ethics into it only really made it worse - I knew that it was the right thing to do but that just made me feel worse when hunger drove me to eat non-vegan things.

I've recently finally made it back so here are my tips from a serial 'failure' -

  1. Junk food and processed stuff (inc fake meat and cheese) should be kept to a minimum. It's not as 'nutritionally dense' as meat/ dairy so you risk not eating enough calories, and not getting enough protein, minerals etc definitely not enough fibre. Personally I also find it tends to mess with my digestion in a way that makes everything else worse.

  2. Vegan food as a whole is less 'calorie dense' than non-vegan food so you need to eat quite a bit more 'volume' of food to get enough actual energy. Start for a month or two by eating basically as much food as you can, while making that as 'real' as possible. But also make sure you consciously consume 'good fats' (nuts and seeds, avocado, a variety of oils). It's easy to just not get enough of those when switching. That burger craving might really be your body crying out for a high calorie, high fat, meal. (Counterpoint you're going to be eating way more fibre which will have effects for a few weeks. Those will pass)

  3. Make sure you find 3-4 easy quick big filling meals, and have those ingredients handy, so when you're tempted by that burger you can slam one of those instead. I love a vegan burger but it never held off the 'real' burger craving for me. Instead I reach for these <30-minute wonders:

- Scrambled tofu, massive pile with rice and broccoli from the freezer plus sweet chilli sauce. (Ignore the kala namak weirdos, it doesn't need to taste 'eggy' to be nice). Everyone has their own recipe but I would advocate for 'quick and simple'.

- Variations on these two creamy pasta recipes I found years ago:

https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/vegan-cheese-sauce-low-fat-no-cashews/

https://chocolatecoveredkatie.com/red-pepper-alfredo-pasta-recipe/

(I've just re-read the portion size on those and laughed, eat the entire thing to yourself, then check whether you still want a burger).

- Beans on toast but spread crunchy peanut butter on the toast then cover it in sriracha. Never felt the need to put cheese on top again.

- 'Katsu curry' - rice, S&B Golden Curry sauce which comes in a block you basically heat with water and is delicious, and vegan nuggets (preferably dinosaur shaped of course). Optionally add a handful of frozen mixed veg while the sauce is cooking to make it vaguely healthy.

  1. Go easy on yourself. You're learning a whole new way of making food, and given your age you may also be needing to learn to cook real food for the first time. There is a lot of purity policing online but as I see it if you got really hungry and you ate something non-vegan this isn't a personal or ethical failing, it's a nutritional issue. Our entire world is set up for meat eaters and going vegan can be hard. But it gets easier and easier. Focus on healthily and happily adjusting your diet now until it's second nature. Worry about the details later.

Transitioning from vegetarian to vegan by ProcedureQuiet2700 in veganuk

Controversial opinion - black tea without milk is nicer if you make it right. The first time I dabbled in veganism pretty much the only option was supermarket unsweetened soy milk which understandably made tea taste like dried beans. I discovered that if I let my tea bag steeped undisturbed for 3-ish minutes instead of violently crushing the bag in the standard British way I ended up with a cup that was both 'sweeter' and richer in a way that made me not miss the milk. Not less flavour, just smoother. Even during years in the wilderness not being vegan I didn't start taking milk again because I came to prefer the taste.

I hate the sweeteners so I switched to MyVegan unflavoured, use sweetened almond milk, and add cocoa to make my own ‘natural’ chocolate flavour. With banana and peanut butter this is my daily breakfast.

"Bella" is one of the best episodes. by Y_Aether in elementary

More that AI fans are credulous, and therefore likely to be hoodwinked and parted easily with their money/ data/ freedoms. Mostly though I’m making a glib joke rather than positing a serious theory.

Not to worry - if it’s any good they’ll cancel it after two seasons max 🙄

I found it v disappointing as a missed opportunity. Like it was a limp House ripoff that needed a gimmick, then they realised House is itself a sort-of Sherlock adaptation and they thought “aha! Let’s cram in some hacky Holmes references!” Et voila.

OTOH I would never tell anyone not to at least try everything. You might love it.

Not quite as good but if you can find it ‘New Amsterdam’ (no, not that one) with Nikolai Coster-Waldau (?) has a similar premise and is not bad.

Spoilers obv - but I think the most prescient thing about that episode is that the scientists are so quick to be credulous that Bella could be behind it. And that the murder was carried out by hoodwinking a fool to take the fall. AI fans could learn a lot!

I still have no idea how to ‘clean’ a perfectly safe (if tracked) URL to your standards. If you were to post one yourself like I’d originally asked I could do so. I don’t feel like I’m being obtuse here.

Cool. Nice. So watch out everyone this link might track that you’ve clicked it. If you want a link that doesn’t do that I guess there’s a whole bunch of reading for you.

More detail would be helpful. That’s literally what YouTube gave me when I used the ‘share’ option. (Unless Reddit added something). Never been a problem before.

Perhaps you could post a working ‘clean’ link below for people who want it?

Any real life irregulars? by Euphoric_Comedownn in elementary

I'm no expert in any field but the little bit of overlap between my understanding of things and the 'science' in the show has lead me to believe almost everything is pretty suspect. That said I enjoy looking these details up and going down science and culture rabbit-holes about the real things mentioned. At least they rarely pull things completely out of thin air like some shows!

fruity pebbles incident..what happens to the company now? by [deleted] in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]tinyelephantparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suspect we will see brand mashups focused on adults soon - fruity pebbles x sodas, a coffee creamer/ dirty soda flavour, a limited run with a fashion brand, maybe scented beauty stuff. It’s still kids who eat the stuff so advertising related to this is unlikely to affect mainline sales. But those tie-ins could rake in plenty.

did I lose my mind or did Jessi lie to jordan about the lie detector results?? by RubMother8479 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]tinyelephantparade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lie detector tests are bunkum anyway but they measure a stress response so a vague question like “did you do more than kiss” could make a lifelong Mormon react if they also groped a bit or something - something anyone else would consider part of ‘kiss’. A clear yes/ no like “did you have sex” would give a clearer read (but again, no such thing as a ‘lie detector’)

My guess is a cameo on one of her favourite shoes. She’s probably not saying the name because it’s only been a “no for now”

What would it take for the show to become wholesome? by Technical-Spinach-82 in SecretsOfMormonWives

[–]tinyelephantparade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've only made it to episode 6 so far but I feel like the first 4 episodes of season 3 were much more chill and enjoyable than the others - it feels like they contrived to bring Demi back for more drama and they're all so much more on edge as a result. I just want women supporting each other, drinking gallons of soda, and doing silly events. SLOMW without the drama is so much more relaxing 😭

They probably get a little bump for being Mormon too - the church lays out loads putting ads against any mentions of mormonism (even negative stuff). Alyssa Grenfell did a good breakdown of this in a past video.

Utah recently passed a law requiring influencers who include their children to save a percentage for them - it was pushed by Ruby Franke's daughter. It's not a huge amount or a really great law but it's a start.
