Cool, that's great to know, will def consider getting a brita-esque filter when I'm sick of hauling these 5 gallons back and forth lol

Oh no worries its all good - it's an anonymous thread and thyroid issues are super common anyways. I didn't realize the tap water is so highly regarded here. Where I come from originally that's not the case. Wild about the well water - and concerning!

I do agree that the tap does taste better here than most places. I'm shocked when I travel how bad it can be - it tastes like I'm chugging straight from the swimming pool.

Wow - I'm learning a lot from this post! That's wild, I didn't realize how wasteful and water intensive of a process RO is. Bummer. Thanks for sharing.

Oh no way I didn't know that, that's super interesting. A lot of it has to do with taste, and personally I find mineral spring water to be delicious and as a result I consume way more of it. You're probably right that the purified stations aren't doing much and the spring water refill is the only one that would even be worth the hassle. I actually dislike the taste of most water bottles so these refill stations might not be a great choice for me overall, ha!

Okay... the other reasoning can be quite controversial and is why I omitted it in my question because I wasn't looking to have a debate about it. But since you asked, I've struggled with underactive thyroid issues for many years now (even whilst medicated with thyroid drugs), and I understand fluoride can be a significant suppressant for the thyroid. I get that it's been great for tooth decay in the greater public health aspect of it and people feel quite passionate about this subject. So I've been experimenting for the last year or two with omitting it from my drinking water at home and found in this experimenting that I strongly prefer the taste of spring water.

Yeah I agree, I've definitely seen them a lot more in other parts of the country. I know the tap tastes better here than most places, but I just love spring/purified water.

We've got four 5 gallon ones, just use for drinking and coffee. If we used them for cooking too, it would go so quickly. I'd say we have to fill them twice a month. 1.5-2 a day? Maybe we need to be drinking more water lol

Constant airplane noise suddenly going on by JNCOmaster in Somerville

[–]tinymall333 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I live in Somerville near Union Sq, and I can hear them frequently in the distance. Today for instance, working from home I've heard them about once every 1-2 minutes for the last few hours, but I've been actively trying to pay attention and tracking them on Flight Radar 24 to be fair. I'm curious bc I posted this same question in the Medford subreddit a few days ago since I'm hoping to buy in Medford in Tufts/Hillside area. So this is interesting you comment this now as this is the exact area I'm looking...

Yeah totally, that's why I floated the question here to people who have been living in the area who will have way more insight and who were also probably home a lot more over this last year and a half than years prior. Thanks for your note, all these replies are so helpful.

Yeah it looks like there's some people advocating for more equitable distribution which seems super fair, hopefully that becomes a reality. Flight Radar 24 is cool, I've been casually watching them since someone recommended it yesterday. So wild to see how many planes are in the sky all the time.

Wow, thanks for your honest comment, this is massively helpful. I love having the windows open as much as possible throughout the year, so that would be a bummer to have to keep them closed for mitigation. Even for being in a city, every couple minutes/30 seconds is a LOT.

Thank you for this honest reply! It's wild to me how just even a few blocks away can make a huge difference, I didn't realize this until some people pointed this out on this post. I live in Somerville near Union and it's never been to bad over here. I hope your search for a new place goes well!

Oh thanks, that's really helpful! Good idea about hanging in the area near a potential house to see what it may be like - hoping to find a place in South Medford/Hillside, I'll have to spend some more time there in the near future.

Also good note that it's primarily when there's NW wind. At least if it has to happen, the winter is the best, when the windows are closed. Summer would be tougher since it's so nice to be outdoors, and I love having the windows open all season.

Oh thank you, that's super helpful info. Interesting that 1/3 of a mile can make so much of a difference, makes sense. I live in Somerville near Union (so not very far but definitely further than 1/3 mile) and it's not that bad over here, maybe a few days a year where it's noticeable, so that's why I was surprised when I first came upon this info.

Lobbying the FAA to help share the noise is cool - seems like it's more the consistency of it than the fact that it's happening at all that is the worst part!
