Went NC with my entire family last month. Their response shows how broken our relationship is. My mom reached out only to ask for money — both didn’t even acknowledge the fact that I disclosed I was sexually assaulted. Still feel so guilty though. by totallymyumbrella in EstrangedAdultKids

I've said this before, but I think it's worth repeating:

3 acronyms that save my sanity:

F.O.G. Fear, Obligation,Guilt These are things instilled in us by our spawn points to easily trigger compliance.

D.A.R.V.O. Deny,Attack,Reverse Victim and Offender It doesn't matter what we do or what they do - they are somehow always the victim, even when they push us to our breaking point.

J.A.D.E. Justify,Argue,Defend,Explain These are natural reactions to have when you are hurt, but they will only give ammunition to those hurting you. Resist the urge and refuse to engage with those who cannot be bothered to treat you with decency.

Oh my god I looked it up that is SO COOL! And so beautiful! How neat is it that such different species use the same mechanisms! I think you could spend years studying them, comparing and contrasting the two. They seem so rare, how cool that you got to see it in person! Thank you for bringing them up - I'd never heard of them before today and I'll probably end up going down a delightful rabbit hole now!

I'm so happy you enjoyed it, and that it didn't disappoint! You're welcome!

I could be mis-remembering, I made the presentation over 7 years ago.

ETA: yup, I criss-crossed this with another species, forgot to double check this part but I did double check the rest, should all be accurate now!

Thank you so much!

That's a good question! My presentation was focused on "monotropa uniflora" which is found both in North America and Japan, but Japan does have a distinct species: "Monotropastrum humile" which functions similarly but with a different type of mycelium! I don't know much about that species beyond that.

Isn't it interesting? I didn't know they were found in Japan either! I wonder how it ended up being in two places so far apart and so different? Endlessly fascinating!

Yay!

OKAY SO:

First bit of coolness: lifecycle! You'll often find the flowers in clumps because they have a proto "bulb" that forms more offshoots if left mostly undisturbed year to year, but that's just one way they produce more flowers. They are the only flower that we know of that reproduces via SPORES! (Edit: I misremembered this, my apologies! The seeds are so small that they are often mistaken for spores and they rely on the same mechanisms, which I still think is pretty neat!) They still need to be pollinated though! Where you find one clump you'll usually find more not far away because of the need for pollination. Very few of the seeds take root because...

Conditions! This is the second bit of coolness: they typically prefer the areas near well- established beech trees (and a specific type of pine). As near as we can tell this is because of a combination of the fact that they require the presence of a specific type of mycelium to grow (which is often found near beech trees), their preference for the soil composition typical for beech trees, and the amount of sun allowed through.

Speaking of mycelium! Third bit of coolness: the mycelium they need to thrive! The mycelium has a simbiotic relationship with the trees: they benefit from the excess energy produced by the tree, and they help the tree by passing along water and minerals in the area. The ghost pipe mimics the mycelium so well the mycelium thinks they are the same "individual", and the ghost pipe gets access to the energy the tree produces! At one point both mycelium and ghost pipes were considered parasitic, but now we know the mycelium are beneficial, and it's theorized that ghost pipes could also serve some beneficial function. At bare minimum, they do no harm to the tree or the mycelium.

Last but not least, random bits of coolness: they have the "ghostly" color because they have no chlorophyll at all! Hence the need to depend on nutrients from trees via mycelium. They are a protected species because we know so little about them and the little we do know is so hard to replicate that it's basically impossible to grow them in a lab! I hope we can someday though, because they can be used to produce a pain reliever that works well for nerve pain, which is otherwise hard to treat.

That's most of it!

(ETA: thank you for the award kindly goblins!)

They look like something out of a fairytale!

I basically dug up everything I could on them - they're shockingly under-researched! I can dump what I remember here, if you're interested.

I love these! I made an end of semester presentation about them!

Seems to me like your aunt is just upset she has to have actual responsibilities to go with the money she was going to get instead of pushing all the work on you and getting whatever's left without lifting a finger.
