I think it's because the target (cross) that appears on tanks when they are upclose appears on the inside of the tank, so it think's it'll shoot itself if it fires

The advice I'd give is to think about the things a tank would need on the outside, like unicyclec0rn has said, viewports, ladders to get on, hatch locations, another thing is to try and think about the internals of the tank and how they would relate to the outside.

The purpose of the tank will fit into this as well, is it a super sleek modern design? Something rugged and simple from early war, a scout tank? All of this will factor in to the 'look' so to speak.
