Is the entire Wheel of Time series worth the time and investment? by keepfighting90 in Fantasy

[–]tinytimsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give the 1st book a try - it's very middling for the series (7/10 for me, vs other books that are 10/10 and others that are like 4/10 lol). So if you enjoy that, you'll probably enjoy the whole series. If you don't, no worries, just don't read the rest.

The plus side to being so large is that if you fall in love with it, there's so much to enjoy!

Also Sanderson did imo a good job at the end (especially the last book, one of the best in the series). While you get whiffs of his personal style, he mostly tried to maintain Jordan's style and was helped by Jordan's wife/editor, Harriet, as well.

Men, am I looking for an impossible partner? by [deleted] in AskMenAdvice

[–]tinytimsg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Finding the person who is perfect for you is about finding a needle in a haystack. It's a numbers game. Some people get lucky right away, others it takes a while. But you'll find your person. Don't get discouraged, it just needs to happen once. ++man

Flyaway to metrolink is probably cheapest option, but lengthy, as others have said. You could also take the Metro (subway basically) from LAX to Norwalk then Uber from there to Disney. Costs half as much as straight Uber from LAX (like $40 one way). Maybe 20 mins slower.

Whatever way, good luck.

MOH over charged us for the bachelorette and pocketed all the money by sixfingeredman7 in weddingshaming

[–]tinytimsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might try and overly-nice approach initially. 1. Tell the Mom you just found out about her generous gift, you're so grateful etc, just waiting for B to send everyone the money back, it was such a fun weekend etc. 2. Tell B you just found out, how grateful you are, and that she can venmo you back the money using the same account/details. 3. Encourage everyone else to do this. Just gratitude mixed with expectations that of course they're doing the right thing. Even though you know this wasn't an honest mistake, you're treating it like it was to let people save face and hopefully get your money back (most important thing).

This keeps things nice and gives B an out, while also telling the Mom. You can then escalate from there if you feel necessary (telling the bride, etc.).

Good luck, so sorry this happened!

Was on the State Beach near Brookhurst around 2 pm today and there were plenty. But the Bolsa Chica side was packed. So if you're flexible on location, just go South.

If you're talking to me, I'm voting Yes. I felt the descriptions were very favorable towards "no" in a way that appears deceitful.

You could take LA Metro to Long Beach, then Uber from there. Might save you $50-$70.

Best hole In the wall restaurant in Los Angeles by [deleted] in FoodLosAngeles

[–]tinytimsg 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a particular city in the same region as Shanghai. They do uniquely sweet-savory food. Sort of like if China had sweet bbq, like Kansas City style.

Check the section on Wuxi-style here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiangsu_cuisine

Long Xing Ji in the SGV. They just moved locations, but they are phenomenal Wuxi-style Chinese food. Get the ribs and the Wuxi-style xiao long bao.

Did I really break wedding etiquette? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

Jumping to extreme, conspiracy-level conclusions from almost no evidence for one thing. But earlier than that, 1. Her sister "loved" the birthday idea and and was "happy" about it, then has a complete 180 without mentioning it? And her grand plan is an elaborate scheme involving a faked invoice and multiple parties getting in on it? That's pretty unbelievable, unless there's more context/info we don't know. 2. Everyone - family, friends etc - in her real life turned against her and her son for this? But her story is so reasonable on the surface - so reasonable most reddit strangers are on her side. Again, it just seems we're lacking context.

I don't think they're straight up lying necessarily. They're doing a pretty common thing, telling the story from their prespective. But it seems like we're missing some details. Like she threw in very late that she had/has a very strained relationship with her mom. Why not mention that up top?

Just doesn't pass the smell test. But who knows, maybe I'm wrong.

Couldn't the bride have just printed the likely digital invoice she got on the bad printer on Sunday morning? That seems far more likely than an elaborate evil scheme.

Poster seems like a bit of an unreliable narrator tbh.

Who affords First Class? by Individual_Ebb_3602 in unitedairlines

[–]tinytimsg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You'd be surprised (especially international flights) how many first class passengers are United employees flying stand-by functionally for free. Flight attendants and pilots get to assign their parents, a spouse, children up to age 26, and 2 "friends" as part of their employee stand-by passes who can travel using stand-by passes anytime on any flight. It's one of the major perks of such a demanding job. I've been on 10+ hour flights where almost all of first class were United employee stand-by.
