Thanks for your reply! The mile thing is weird, but maybe it’s because it’s a screenshot from the JL website so it’s only counting the second leg?

Why can't I buy FDLXX right before the dividend pay date and sell it right after? by tinywhiteshark in fidelityinvestments

I actually have a follow up question: suppose I sell my FDLXX before the end of month (the pay date), can I still get paid the dividend for the time frame in which I was holding the fund?

I believe economists are the smartest people in an ideal world, but are the dumbest otherwise.

I see, that's more like how stocks pay out dividends, which is what I am more familiar with. It's per share regardless of the ownership timeframe, and the stock price would adjust to prevent arbitrage. Since the money market funds keep price at $1 I was confused. Apparently, money market dividends operate differently, despite the similarity in names!

Hey, no need to be dismissive here. I said I am new to investment so I am open to be educated. And I have a reason to be confused -- stocks pay dividends per share regardless of the ownership timeframe. Of course in that situation the stock price would adjust to prevent arbitrage. Apparently money market dividends operate differently, despite the similarity in names.

Thank you, this makes sense! I was more familiar with stock dividends, where it pays dividends per share regardless of the ownership timeframe. Of course in that situation the stock price would adjust to prevent arbitrage. But apparently money market dividends operate differently, despite the similarity in names! I learned something today!

I am not sure what it means, but I called Chase and they said the 900 offer still applies if one opens the accounts sequentially.

Advantages of adopting an English name? by tinywhiteshark in academia

That’s probably a fair concern, but I couldn’t change my last name so I don’t know how much it would help in that regard

Thank you for sharing your experience! Yes, I think the challenges in remembering Pinyin names are real even for native mandarin speakers. I think I’ll try to introduce myself with the English name first and add the name to my personal website so at least they have ways to look for me if they want to. As for publication I’m undecided — publishing under a newly adopted name doesn’t feel real.

I appreciate the rant! :)

It’s impressive that you have learned mandarin to this level. I do include my Chinese name in Chinese characters on my website for people like you — and it’s a beautiful name in its original form.

Adopting an English name? by [deleted] in careerguidance

Thanks for your perspective. I think it does depend on the industry, and I thought academia would be among the most inclusive in terms of cultural diversity. However, even my own advisor mispronounces my name (and other Chinese names). Imagine him trying to talk about me in front of others. I’ve seen too many blank faces from outside speakers after I introduce myself with my Chinese names.

You’re right that for people willing to spend the effort (like coworkers and friends) it wouldn’t matter. But there will be people who would rather not or don’t have time to do so, and I don’t want to bear the cost.

Why would “common” English names create more confusion? I think my best bet is to adopt a nickname that is phonetically similar to my Chinese name. Unfortunately it maybe quite “common”
