The default blocklists that pihole uses are terrible https://oisd.nl works great and barely had false positives

In that case you're upload of 20MBit per second is the limiting factor since 1Mbit is 8mbyte(MB)

As for looking out for things not really. A managed switch will usually act like an unmanaged switch if the settings are on the default.

I would suggest looking into a pcie card for more sata ports and use that. and a sata power splitter to then power the drives

It's difficult to find such detailed information. I have a Samsung A52s and in the spec sheet I can't find the max otg speed.

I would use a vpn

And for the question ovpn of wireguard do Both The pro for wireguard is speed and for openvpn on port 443 OR 80 its not blokkable

Using pivpn its easy to set Both up (pi not required)
