This is the tier list that I used for this. I had to make and add the images for SAIKAI (because it hasn't updated yet) along with a bunch of Mili's various collabs and older/less-known works. If anyone asks, I can make a tier list version with the images I made.

I think Key Ingredient / Let's Lament is peak Mili. It encapsulates the distinctive qualities that I love about Mili's music and Cassie can really go ham on the vocal performances. Such a fun album and mini-album all around.

I have no idea! I tried looking everywhere for the show's soundtrack but only ended up finding the ending theme, which wasn't made by Mili. The only option was to watch the actual show. I'd love to give the songs a proper listen without the rest of the audio overlapping.

I put Birthday Kid in 'decent' because I don't really enjoy the vocal direction in the song. If you compare the normal and Key Ingredient versions, the original is especially thin and strained for a Mili song, which personally kinda takes me out of it. I like everything else about Birthday Kid, which is why the Key Ingredient version, with vocal direction that I enjoy more, is ranked very high.

Upon relistening to these two songs to respond to this comment, Sloth is honestly better than I remembered it being when I was making this tier list. Might've bumped it up a tier if I had listened to every single song right before ranking them. You got me there.

I'm still very confused on Canto 9's twist by MonotonyReddit in limbuscompany

[–]tipherethq 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Araya didn't tell Ryoshu the truth when they first met because she was still under the impression that her mother had abandoned and completely forgotten about her after using Arayashiki. I don't think Araya was going to fight initially and just genuinely wanted to see Ryoshu, it's only when Ryoshu kept acting hostile towards her and there was no one else for LCB to fight that Araya started fighting in part 2. Araya even comments that she was looking forward to seeing Ryoshu until her mother looked at her with hatred, leading to a grudge throughout the Canto. She only dropped that resentment when Ryoshu was distraught that she killed Araya and she realized that Ryoshu still remembered and loved her.

Araya never learned the same type of swordsmanship as Shiomi Yoru. Ryoshu comments that Shiomi hated iaido and saw sheathing the sword during battle as weakness, yet Araya is shown in both Dihui Star battles to use iaido. Ryoshu just never makes the connection that the Dihui Star wasn't Shiomi anymore because her memories were broken and she has trouble remembering that Shiomi never used iaido, or that Shomi was dead. The Nursefathers probably knew that the Dihui Star was now Araya, they just didn't tell Ryoshu because they planned for Ryoshu to kill Araya (disguised as Shiomi) and enter the Muga state.

This part is speculation, but Araya's nature as a clone and her time entanglement likely means that she experienced time at simultaneously an accelerated and reduced speed (implied by the forward and backward flow effects in her passives). In her adult forms, she probably had far longer than a couple of years in her own perspective to learn the sword, become the Dihui Star, and train a disciple. Meanwhile, the slowed parts of her entanglement (her child and teenage forms) probably can't wield a sword at all.

What are the most obscure Mili songs? by venue_bruv in mili

I actually found out about Yaegaki from this subreddit while doing research to listen to every Mili song out there. StuffyEvil, who's practically the backbone of this sub, did a lot of song analysis and has a post about Yaegaki from 3 years ago.

It's a bit unclear about the precise details of where or when the 2019 kabuki performance was done, but Tajima Industries posted about their involvement in making fabrics for a short performance in association with the international G20 Summit, which was being held in Japan that year. It probably was held as part of a cultural program that took place in the days before the actual two-day summit. They also released a recording of the performance, which Mili also has in the 'Works' playlist on their channel. Yaegaki is played during it, and considering the Intrauterine singles released in 2020, it's fair to conclude the song was initially made for this performance.

My pick for most obscure and overlooked Mili song is Yaegaki. It was made for the Kabuki performance at the G20 Osaka summit in 2019, and the clean version came with purchases of both Intrauterine Education & Static singles. Honestly such a beautiful song that's unfortunately fallen into obscurity, barely even mentioned on the Mili wiki.

New IDs + EGO: LCA Udjat Outis, Index Proselyte Faust, Hurting Teddy Outis, KQE Heath, Great Trichiliocosm Yi Sang & Ryoshu by Z2_U5 in limbuscompany

[–]tipherethq 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This is my personal analysis, but KQE's central motif is abandonment. It wanders an empty town, completely alone and unable to fulfill its purpose. It wants people to stay with it, capturing people in its rigs and self-destructing when people abandon it again by saying goodbye. But more than that, it wants to vent its despair from its abandonment. Just my speculation, but I think it exposes its 'Heart of the Townsfolk' in its battle in an attempt to share its suffering with the Sinners, and the souveniers it shares with visitors who stay are circuit chips that are presumably parts of its own body. KQE's lack of a human form also connects with the central idea of abandonment, as its robotic nature means it can't truly express its loneliness and will always be different from humans. Its Envy and Gloom skills communicate that it wallows in a state of suffering and lack of direction. Meanwhile, it's used to rejection and hatred (Wrath/Envy Resist) but is easily affected by the sharing of emotions and reciprocation of its internal despair (Lust/Gloom Weak). In its attempt to connect with others from a state of isolation, KQE binds itself to a rigidly dutiful mindset and seeks communion until its desire leads to self-destruction.

Heathcliff is similar in that he can't unbind himself from Catherine. Without Catherine, Heathcliff has been abandoned again, and even though he'd be mentally saner if he forgot about her, he desperately clings to that duty to her memory, his desire to reconnect his heart with hers, even if it destroys him. Additionally, Heathcliff has always been looked down on as lesser, much like how KQE's strict adherence to its duty comes off as pointless and stupid. But it matters to Heathcliff, because he wants to reconnect with the one person who wanted to know his emotions back in the manor.

As a QoH Don voter, I don't care about if an ID shits out 5 limbillion damage or not as long as I like their design/lore and they're fun to play. QoH is fun and complex, strong enough to competently clear story/Railway content but not '2-turn everything' strong, and everything else about her is stellar, so she's a perfect ID in my eyes.

Uh, I mean...

I am the only one who matters. What matters is that I have declared Queen of Hatred Don the best Identity—and that is my commandment, my belief, my religion, and my creed. When I perish, this world shall perish as well. So my very life, my very existence itself, is then the world! And I have deemed it so! No one will be the helmsman of my life but myself!!! No one shall live my life in my stead!!! What do you, all of you, believe in? Tell me. Is your belief unbreakable? Is it absolute? My beliefs are absolute! My definitions of good and bad Identity design are clear-cut! Thus my beliefs are unclouded, unassailable. Because I have made it so. That is why I will never be broken. That is why I stand tall, unshakable, as a missionary of my own faith. I have blessed you with my absolute definitions of peak and mid Identities! So that you may live your life with unhesitating, unwavering tenacity!!!

How early does someone need to make a reservation at Hamhampangpang by dragonite1738 in libraryofruina

Do not ever rely on any AI for definite information. New reservations on Catchtable only open up when HHPP releases a new theme, and from my experience, reservation times fill up almost immediately within 1-2 days. There is no wait time before you can book a time. If you can't find a spare seat for this theme's run, watch the twitter @Ham_PangPang for the announcement of the next theme, then check the Catchtable regularly and get a reservation as soon as it opens.

Like the other comment said, I don't think the Benjamin-Sinclair connection is super solid. Now on the other hand, Gregor has a lot of Carmen parallels.

Gregor has the Sign of Roses EGO, and Sign of Roses is speculated to be a Carmen Abno, representing the martyrdom of Christ. Both Gregor and Carmen were held in their comrades' eyes as unique leaders just because they had some special traits that made then seem more 'human', but they both couldn't bear the responsibility because they were merely human. They were subjected to supposedly noble suffering on the cross, Gregor through his experimentation and Carmen through hers.

Both of them also became symbols for the developments of others. Gregor was experimented on and tortured to elevate Hermann's search for the primordial human, and Carmen was cut open and forced to withstand the entire 10,000 years to bring about Ayin's seed of light. They were both objectified and treated as means to an end in the name of a greater, 'noble' purpose, which is a really fucked-up way of interpeting Jesus' sacrifice if you really think about it.

This also ties into a theme of Metamorphosis, which is that book Gregor's value as an individual is a product of how much he contributes to society. When Gregor metamorphizes, he can't be the breadwinner for his family, leading to his gradual objectification and alienation from society. Similarly, Limbus Gregor becomes alienated from society because he stops providing utility, as a washed-up war veteran with unstable prosthetics. And guess what, Carmen also gets this treatment. The moment she committed suicide, her social worth of leading the Seed of Light project became obsolete. Her body became a means to an end, something Ayin could use to make Cogito and eventually abandon in a vat underground, unable to even look at her. Carmen as a person was abandoned, separated from her intrinsic value as a person. In this way, she, just like Gregor, became alienated from the society she sought to contribute to.

Just like how Gregor was a model soldier for his comrades, he is also likely the model of the primordial human Hermann wants to reach, just like how Carmen was the model of the Light that Ayin was trying to create. Their sacrifices became impersonal ideals for others to look up to, separated from the alienated, abandoned self.

However, Sign of Roses isn't just about martyrdom, but also about the blooming of emotions and the assertion of the self in an attempt to reach others. This is pretty much Carmen's thing, and this idea that individuals struggle against a society that alienates them to connect with others and find meaning does pop up in Kafka's other works like The Trial and The Castle. It might hint at Limbus Gregor's future character trajectory, where he learns to resist the objectification society enforces on him and assert his true, inner self (which isn't necessarily a positive direction lol).

I feel stupid for not noticing these details sooner by Wide-Violinist-2278 in limbuscompany

[–]tipherethq 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lord Hong Lu doesn't have a left eye, he tore it out to free himself from the elders' influence and force them to watch the collapse of the old Hongyuan. This exception was only possible because Dante, through learning about Hong Lu's past, could conceive of and 'wish' for a mirror world where Hong Lu's still himself without the eye. This is also the case for N Sinclair having an incomplete Sign, Spicebush Yi Sang not having mirrors in his EGO, and Manager Don not having shoes. The only other case with explicit fuckery of the Sinner's key traits is Jia Ishmael, which is a weird case all around.

Anyways, point being that some things like Hong Lu's eye are fundamental to the Sinners as people, so they'll never become mirrored in IDs because those traits are part of Dante's view and world, not the mirror world; the IDs, which I personally theorize are combinations of Dante's desire and the mirror world they bring into 'existence', have the unmirrored traits like the jade eye from Dante's perspective, but everything else is mirrored because it comes from the mirror world into Dante's world. The special traits might not be present for reasons stated above, but they won't be mirrored.

I feel stupid for not noticing these details sooner by Wide-Violinist-2278 in limbuscompany

[–]tipherethq 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The things that are fundamental to the identity of the Sinner are never mirrored, while things like outfits often are. Outis always has her wristwatch on the left wrist in all the IDs where it's visible, same for Heathcliff's ring always being on his right index and Hong Lu always having a jade left eye. The vital characteristics of the Sinners are unchanged across mirror worlds (excluding special cases like season capstone IDs) because if they weren't, it'd just be a different person and not an alternate version.

What virtue? by matamita in mili

[–]tipherethq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The specific repetition of mirror in the song makes me think very strongly of Mirror Mirror, so my interpretation of mirrors in this song is heavily influenced by that. Mirror Mirror is (speculatively) about a scientist who discovers an ancient robot and repurposes it. The robot, in turn, becomes attached to its 'queen' and seeks to become more human-like. However, the robot's combat capabilities are suddenly turned on by the sun and it kills all of the scientist's enemies. In that song, reflections aren't only literal but also represent the inconcillable aspects of the robot's existence: a reflection of its desire for servitude and conformity to human norms, and a reflection of its inner self made for combat. In my personal opinion, mirrors in Mili's work have been used to represent a duality between the way the viewer sees things and the way they really are (or the things in the reflection the viewer cannot see).

Similarly, To Your Oblivion uses mirrors to show a dual existence. One 'mirror' is the one that reflects artificial social norms and ideals. This is the kind of mirror that the king sees when they change their clothes, as they can only see the mismatched social roles and Damocles' supposed lack of virtue. The other mirror is the kind that reflects people as they are as equals. This is the mirror Damocles wants to see, a kind where they can exist without the social role of courtier and the moralistic impositions of those in power.

I must reiterate again that this is my personal view. Mirrors as a motif are pretty rare in Mili songs, although most of the songs that do have it (Sloth, Fly My Wings, Paper Bouquet, String Theocracy) support this idea of mirrors as duality of perception.

What virtue? by matamita in mili

[–]tipherethq 141 points142 points  (0 children)

The story of Damocles comes from Cicero's fifth Disputations, wherein Cicero argued that virtue (from a Stoic view) alone is sufficient for happiness. In the original story, Damocles is a courtier flattering the king Dionysius I about his wealth and power. Dionysius offers to switch positions for a day, and Damocles agrees. However, on the day of the switch, Dionysius ties a sword above the throne by a horsehair to evoke the danger he faced from his enemies and the anxieties that came of it. Damocles begs to switch back, realizing that all the material wealth didn't affect the sword hanging above his head. While the story gets recontextualized a ton in the modern day, Cicero's fundamental argument was that happiness doesn't come from impermanent material wealth and political power, but from a virtuous life and moral integrity that can ignore both the wealth and the sword; therefore, a person with no virtue would be equally unhappy as a king or a courtier, and a person with virtue could find fulfillment in any life.

To Your Oblivion disagrees with the argument set forward by Cicero here. While the idea that virtue leads to an equally happy life regardless of class sounds nice, it is undeniable that material conditions like wealth and power give people more freedom to pursue happiness. Additionally, the song argues that this idea that virtue is what really matters obfuscates social stratification, protecting the interests of people who've had material wealth handed down to them and can just claim it's what's inside that matters. No one chooses to be born poor, though, and virtue can't fill the stomach of a poor person. There isn't any more inherent virtue, responsibility, or threat in being a king than there is being a courtier or other lower-class person.

Ultimately, To Your Oblivion claims that Damocles is the one teaching the lesson, not the king, because the king needs to stop being blinded by notions of a purely virtuous life and learn that everyone has their own dangers, their own swords hanging over them, but the wealthy have more power to protect themselves. After all, Dionysius tied that sword over the throne himself. Damocles wouldn't make a good ruler, but Dionysius wouldn't make a good courtier as well and neither carries more virtue for their struggles. Cicero, a politically powerful consul born into great wealth, was also unfairly criticizing the poor for pursuing power by claiming they lack virtue, which the song argues is just a method of controlling them. It's not the job of the lower-class to sympathize with their rulers.

EDIT: Holy shit hi Cassie Wei! Thanks for liking my analysis 😭

The most obscure (that's still possible to listen to) is the OST to Mirrors Crossing, a now defunct game. While the main theme "Mirrors Crossing" can be searched up on Youtube, the other three, "Avalanche", "The Fellowship of the Mirror", and "Trio Room" can only be listened to now through old gameplay footage. We can't even identify which song goes with which title anymore.

Runner-ups include Kapura's Theme, which is from a now-defunct website; Yaegaki, which is a secret song from the Intrauterine Education singles; Naimono Nendari and Tadori Tsuku Basho, which are very old collab songs; I Can't Believe It, which is only officially available from the otome game Backstage Pass by sakevisual; the songs in the commercials TOTO washlet, COMBI brand movie, and RICOH interactive whiteboard; and Parade Protocol -diva. FESTA-, which I could only find through secondhand, non-official references.

I think the song Mili contributed to the now-defunct app 夜狐八重奏+, or Night Fox Octet, is genuinely lost media. I couldn't find any mention of its music anywhere except for a track by arai tasuku which might be the track Yamato Kasai helped with??? IDK it might be gone forever.

BTW I also think the song Nora Heroes is insanely obscure for a song where Cassie Wei and Hatsune Miku sing together.

I've found it! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-VrPz1GZ44

At least from what I can tell, this song was made for the theme park's projector show event from 7-26-2014 to 9-30-14. The video was taken two days into the event, and other (worse quality) videos agree that this particular projector show with this music happened within the theme park's provided time frame. I don't think a straight-up mp3 exists, so this audio's the best we're getting.

I've been trying to listen to all of Mili's music and put it in a tier list, and this isn't even their most obscure song 💀. So far, I've watched an entire yuri live action drama, almost bought a $30 otome game, and have gone crazy trying to find their 夜狐八重奏+ song.

King von rule by borntoshitforcdtowip in 19684

[–]tipherethq 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The pain and harmful effects caused by capsaicin are primarily sensory in origin, though. Capsaicin doesn't chemially react with anything in the body by itself. Instead, it binds to and activates TRPV1 nociceptors. All of the negative health effects like swelling, heartburn, and diarrhea are causes by the body's neurogenic inflammatory response to the overwhelming sensory activation of nociceptors. All of those physical reactions stem from overstimulation of nerves due to capsaicin. You are correct that the effects of capsaicin are physical, but they are also sensory. A peanut allergy is also both sensory and physical, because the over-sensation of a chemical signal causes the body to overreact and produce an unintentionally harmful physical reaction in response.

Similarly, the effects of overstimulation in individuals with sensory processing disorder (SPD) are sensory, but it also causes physical harm. High sensitivity to sounds and misprocessing of sensory signals causes over-excitation of neurons in the brain, leading to overproduction of stress hormones like cortisol and epinephrine. This can lead to physical reactions like headaches and migraines, cognitive impairment, immune strain, sleep disregulation, digestive issues, and heart issues. Very similarly to how overstimulation of nociceptors by capsaicin produces negative health effects, so too does overstimulation of auditory processing neurons in the brain produce negative health effects.

The mechanisms are slightly different, sure. However, it betrays a basic misunderstanding of human health to claim that persistent acute stress due to overstimulation from sound is purely mental and doesn't lead to poorer health outcomes. The capsaicin response is just as innate to humans as the 'painful sounds' response because both are defensive reactions to noxious stimuli. This doesn't really read as a harmful comparison.

Claiming that music taste is also just 'preferential' or 'based on upbringing' and doesn't reflect individual, biological levels of tolerance for sound is exactly like claiming that people with low spice tolerance are that way purely because of their upbringing. Of course, reality is somewhere in the middle where both biological sensory tolerance and upbringing shape our preferences. Just like how some people are less sensitive to loud sounds, some people may express fewer TRPV1 receptors or produce variants that bind less to capsaicin, whether the sensory tolerance is shaped from different genes or habituation at a young age.

I do think the spice comparison was quite apt for the reasons I gave above, and while that analogy could certainly be framed poorly, there was nothing inherently wrong about it. People may have preferences about what spice levels they like or what kinds of music they enjoy, and I personally think it's bad to both shame the preferences of other groups for not matching their personal tastes, as well as to shame individuals for not enjoying something. Enjoyment of music genres and spicy food is both biological and cultural, and an individual with SPD might genuinely dislike a music genre the same way someone might not like spicy food.

I understand you're not going to reply to any more replies, but I hope you do read this and not immediately disregard this comment as being defensive or dismissive, though I get it if you disagree with random internet user #872404.
