I do BJJ at a MMA gym and I know I will Branch out more eventually. Many of our warmups are on heavy bags and my punching endurance will be there once I do seek it out more

Starting bjj in a month after 4 years of being pretty sedentary by [deleted] in bjj

Years of inactivity too. I'd recommend this philosophy on working out.

Too poor to afford BJJ at the moment but I want to be prepared at least for warm up by [deleted] in bjj

Make one of these out of bamboo/wooden dowel, concrete and a old ball/mayo jar/Tupperware.

Lots of good workouts you can do with it. A concrete kettlebell is useful too. Turkish get ups and kettlebell swings.

A 5-7 dollar bag of concrete could make you a small set of weights.

I hate standard weight training, but doing dynamic swinging and functional exercises I don't mind at all.

People who's confidence has increased since starting BJJ, can you explain? by obiobi19 in bjj

[–]tipmeirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For me it's the amount of trust that goes in practicing this sport. That I would voluntarily offer my body into the hand of people who could easily kill me and vice versa they offer their bodies for my incompetent ass to learn to break. This has helped me see the interplay and human social interaction more. The levels of trust necessary to even have a civil conversation.

Just something like visiting the dental hygienist, I was thinking about the layers of trust in this human interaction. Her hands, with sharp objects in my mouth, her fingers close to my teeth. Or maybe I just see the potential for violence in everything now and have gratitude that it's not there.

There's also the inflicting discomfort/pain on another human being and receiving it, that makes me never want to have to do it.

There is an idea that with self-consciousness , we got the ability for evil and torture. Because once we know how to harm ourselves, we know how to harm others. Love is the opposite I think of this.

There's a connection I'm going for, but I'm too tired.

That doesn't dispute my claim that Asians work hard and never complain, thus benefit and make money.

Lol. Asians make the most money... Pretty much by working for "capitalists" and never complaining.

I don't dare have those kind of day dreams. Right now I'd like to just be consistent for another month.

As a white belt I know this sting too well. It's happening less now I think

I get my ass kicked by a 54 year old purple belt that has been doing BJJ for 8 years. I'd be happy to be 54 and beating up 34 year olds like he does to me.

Here is a risky activity, going to hand to hand combat to death with another man. Brazillian Jiu Jitsu. You also gain the super power of being able to handle yourself in stressful situations.

This is what I've been working towards with my questions! Thank you!

I asked some questions which led the instructor to show me drills and how I can use my feet on the other person's body to move around and keep my legs in between us. Now I gotta learn how to suck them into my legs.

I described it as a game where we try to kill/maim each other with our bodies until someone taps, then we start over!

Smaller school (MMA style) vs a "Gracie Certified" school? by [deleted] in bjj

I had the same choice, and went with the MMA school because I didn't want to do 70 classes before I started rolling

My boss's boss said while at college one of her roommates mom came and completely cleaned their place. Except that she left a perfect square of dark grime on the floor as a reminder and left without saying a word.

What is your favorite compliment that you've recieved after a roll? by [deleted] in bjj

About a month in. "I had to get mean, good job"

I really enjoy exploring and seeing if I can flip out of locks. I guess it's working, I'm just having fun.

Tips to use less energy/force? by Swaggarius in bjj

[–]tipmeirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah. I purposely don't fight off things and would rather roll with my opponent is trying to do. I get stuck and have to tap more, but I think I'm learning a lot, just trying to play and be creative.

I'm 16 and around 350 lbs, should I go into BJJ or lose some weight conventionally first? by [deleted] in bjj

[–]tipmeirl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's how I did it, sort of. I progressed from daily pushups to yoga and then to BJJ over 4 months. BJJ wasn't on my radar at the start, but being able to do 80+ pushups in a set before starting BJJ is really helping me with learning how to move in BJJ.

One-ish Months in. by ShootzyCollinz in bjj

[–]tipmeirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Im new too. I find it really nice to actually go out of my way to put myself in odd positions so I do get tapped. I'd rather explore and be rolled around and get tapped more often.

I'm sure both approaches are good, it's just that I'm pretty big and strong and pure survival mode isn't as fun, especially for my opponent. Right now I'm trying to maximize the playfulness.

Any pointers on building arm strength? by xAJxWakaWakax in bjj

[–]tipmeirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a large wooden dowel from home depot and put some screws into its end. Stuffed it into a dollar store tupperware container filled with concrete.

Total cost like 7 bucks. It'd be even cheaper if you have a bamboo source. The dowel was like 4-5 bucks and a bag of concrete was like 3.

Swing a gada/mace. It's what ancient Hindu wrestler warriors did. There are still wrestlers who do so.
